Lately I have found that Amazon is a bit cheaper after you add up the shipping at rockauto...but, sometimes the only place I can find a part is at rockauto...it helps to shop around... :type

I had a bunch of stuff in my cart that was on clearance, it was around $50 total. Got ready to check out and shipping was over half the tital cost. I deleted the order very fast. Got what I needed from amazon and e bay with free shipping at less than 50 bucks. Ill never use them again. I have bought from them before, good service but not worth it. Never had any trouble from ebay or amazon either.

Sometimes their clearance items ship from the same location (i.e., location B) and it keeps the shipping costs low. Just paid $3 for clearance wipers but unfortunately had to pay $7 for shipping. I looked around and rockauto won out in the price department! There are times when it makes sense to go through rockauto and sometimes it's cheaper to go through Advance Auto Parts or eBay.

I will have to add my recent observations with RockAuto and the "Shipping Price Scam"...

I spent my time finding the right brand named/higher quality items I want... all with the little "Shipping Truck" next to each item... so they should all ship from the same warehouse...

Sometimes I could get every item being properly shipped from the same warehouse... then after I add another item, it would give me "A, B" and sometimes "A, B, C" shipments... shipping costs also changed several times...

"All 9 items shipping from A = $9.99"

"Most items shipped from A = $13.99, some shipping from B = $9.99"

Or

"A = $17.99, B = $17.99, and C = $13.99 shipment costs"

If I hit "refresh" on my browser any one of those above shipment choices will pop up... what a scam... on your next RockAuto order, you might want to hit refresh a few times to see if they are trying to rip you off too

Sure they do, but the nearest auto parts store is still over 30 miles (one way) from me... the items for the cars I was buying for are all "special order" items at those stores, so I would have to drive to them, order the parts & pay up front, drive back home... wait a week or more for them to arrive... drive back down and hope they didn't sell/give it to someone else (it's happened) or do what happened to me on my last "shop local for auto parts" experience... the jackass manager tossed my alternator and cv axle in the back of a delivery truck that was only delivering brake pads and rotors :smackface ... had to wait 2 freaking hours for him to finish his deliveries...

I order all my stuff online now :D ... maybe if I lived closer to those stores... but time is money... and if RockAuto keeps playing these "shipping cost/warehouse A, B, C shipments" I will find other online sources for parts at a competitive price

:cheers

That's strange. I haven't bought from rock auto in quite a while. Been buying parts for an older car and everything I needed was the same price at the parts store (unexpected).

As others have mentioned, I also use ebay quite a bit with parts. If I do look at RockAuto, I will try the refresh and see what happens. The whole shipping location changing seems fishy to me.

I am 37 miles one way, (to closest, one option only, then 60+ to next) so I know, all to well the pain you are feeling. But, when you add in the two round trips, even driving a Metro, that shipping cost is not that bad. Learning to minimize the cost helps a lot.

One further technique that I use, is to order standard maintenance items ahead of my actual need. ie, if I am ordering item X, I will also order tune up parts, or what ever, up to the point that shipping goes up.

When I ordered oil filters, wix @ $1.41 ea. I started by adding 5 to my order. shipping was $5.99. kept adding more, until shipping went up. When it went up, @ about 22 o/f's, shipping jumped to $12.99. I backed off by one. $5.99

Sometimes, you need what you need, and pay the price. BUT, add on a cap, rotor, and wires (or what ever), and YOU WIN!

Edit; As Gonfa pointed out RA is not the only online option. I just scored a pair of 'loaded' calipers for $14.99 shipping included. Don't need them right now, but at that price I will have them when I need them.
