Bought a cheap usb wire camera that will fit inside the spark plug hole. Took a few pictures with it and thought I would post it. Car has about a 1000 miles on it now, plugs look good but there is some carbon build up on the pistons already. I have been running some MMO in the gas to see if it helps some.

I need to find a way to get more light into the hole so the picture comes out better.

Is there more carbon build up in a engine that is drove around town more than one driven on the highway?
Depends entirely on how you drive it. Town driving, always hitting low RPMs, stop and go, rarely reaching operating temps, poor fuel quality, less than frequent oil changes would cause carbon to build up. This is a common problem on VW 1.8T engines -- the engine doesn't like short drives -- it prefers long drives, otherwise sludge starts to build up and we have a problem. I'm tacking this issue with my wife's car by using synthetic oil, more frequent oil changes, and adding fuel injector cleaners. Thankfully, the 1.0L engine is more resilient.

What would burn those carbons off is a mix of seafoam and high RPM revving. If you drive in town, try to stick to low gears and rev high every now and then. Bad for MPG in the short term, good for the engine in the long term.
That's what my driving is like. I only drive 4 mile to work and 4 miles back. The engine barely gets warmed up by the time I get home. I do drive to my mom's which is a 20 mile drive one way.

I try to run in lower gears and higher rpm's which still gives me a decent MPG. There is not a lot of load on the engine.

I am currently using a regular oil and after another oil change I'll be switching to synthetic oil. Maybe that will help clean the engine up some more.

Time for some MMO in the fuel, and wind 'er up Steve. Monitor your buildup for a few three tanks, but in the end you may need to get it out on the road where you can run up near 4000 rpm for an extended enough period of time to get the combustion chambers a bit hotter to clean it off.

At least try increasing your shift point well up into the 3Ks, and keep your "stabilized" rpm above or around 3000, and when you drive to your Mom's, keep the rpms up as close to 4K for as long as you can. I would worry less about the fuel economy for now and find what it takes to keep it clean and then "back down" your rpms cautiously from there over time while keeping an eye on the pistons with your cool new camera.

Or let cwatkin do an Italian tune up on it or let ZXTjato drive it to work for a day. They'll get it cleaned right up. :thumb Just unplug any GPS tracking device you may have so you aren't tempted to download the data to your computer after the fact and see what they did. :O

I have been putting MMO in it the last few tanks. Trying to keep the rpm's up to around 3000 in town.

I think I'll do my best to get rid of it I won't need any help from other members to help. Thanks for the thought though.

Have had some problems with the idle on the car but have seemed to get everything back to normal.

Now if it would just warm up so I could work on the rest of the car

I filled up last night and calculated the mileage. Drove 277.5 miles and put 6.79 gallons back in it. checks out to be 40.8 mpg. Looks like it is getting better since it is warming up a little bit and I got the engine problems worked out. Last tank was around 35 mpg.

I check the inventory at pull a part at least once a week. This past week they put out two 96 metros.

I have been looking to get a different exhaust on mine since is has been repaired and is getting louder. One of the cars they just put out had new exhaust on it. So now I have a newer exhaust to put on mine from the cat back. That should quiet it down some.

Also got lucky and found a A/C delete plate. A little rusty looking but it should clean up ok.

Got a head and engine block that had only 77000 miles on i. I'll post some pictures of them later.

Passenger side floor mat. Will clean up nice.

Engine with 77000 miles on it. It still shows some cross hatching in the cylinder.

I never seen exhaust valves that white before. Usually they are black.

Go the back section of my exhaust put on over the weekend. It is so quiet now while driving.

Since it is getting warmer I want to get busy cleaning out the inside of the car.

Put on some new rear hatch struts put on. Just one of these holds up the hatch! No more getting hit in the head or back while trying to get something out of the back of the car. :thumb
