This is what the pit looked like. It was over the coolant area and not on a sealing surface. The guy said it would be easier to weld it up then to take the .020" off and it could effect the valve timing.

I have one piston checked out and ready to put in the cylinder. Hopefully tomorrow i can work on it some more.

Working a lot here lately and don't have a lot of free time. Trying to get what overtime I can, it doesn't always last. More money I can put into the metro.
wouldn't have affected valve timing.

and- its a non interference motor.

0.020 is a lot to take off, but some people take upwards of 0.060 off and are still fine (usually to build a higher compression ratio)
but your area- you will probably be ok for the weld.
liking where your project is going. ^o)

Got my valves lapped in yesterday. Was going to assembly the springs and such, then realized I haven't bought my gasket set yet so I don't have any valve stem seals.

Looked up the napa part number for a full gasket set. It is on sale now. Paid under $150 for the complete set. Have to go pick it up today before I go to work.

Hopefully this weekend I can get the head complete and start on my block assembly.

Any ideas on a name for the car.

Thought about - The little engine that could - or labor of love. Atleast that was something I could put on a license plate on the front of it.

I am the one on the left.

I suck at naming cars.

So heres my short list
Archie- comic strip reference
Jane - jane doe reference, also janes' addiction, and one time popular female name.
Then you can say "jane and I are going..."
To be fair any female name would work for that.

I got the idea from my daughter who is single and named her car Roy.
It works for givin a no answer to a date - "oh, Roy and I are going to the beach...., ". and so on. :lol

Could work for ya, the ladies are beating down the door for such a frugal
Guy.
;)

@BRSJA My comment on your great suggestions is that many of them are great.

Of course it is, but that doesn't mean it can't be read the other way. Perhaps it was free but also needed to be freed from it's state of disrepair?

You are correct. I made the name up due to the fact my brother gave me a metro he had. It never got fixed due to having major rust problems in the rear of the car. I'm going to use it for parts. Has lots of good body and interior parts. Haven't figured out what to do with the 4 cyl. engine and auto trans yet. I like the 3 cyl. a little better.

I had a few free minutes today so worked on getting the head assembled.

Got the valve train parts all cleaned up. Got to love the ultrasonic cleaner.

Note to self. Remember to put the valve spring seat on before the valve stem seals! :banghead

Next note to self. Remember to install the spring correctly. Small gap end goes toward valve spring seat! :banghead

Thank god for the FSM!

Used a valve spring tool I got from David95237 and it works great.

I have a picture of the finished head without the cam and lifters but having trouble with photo bucket.

Try again tomorrow

Here is the head with the valve springs all in. Lapped the valves and all looks good there.

Got one of the pistons in today and all the clearances check out.

Think I might need a little help. Just went out and brought the piston to top dead center. It sticks up past the top of the block about .010".

This changes everything. Any suggestions econoboxer?

A stock head gasket should be fine.
Do you know how to clay a motor?
Another alternative is to use a thicker head gasket.

alterom ultra 8 head gasket napa part#
ATM ECDM745 0.066 in 1.68mm

I literally stick out of the head twice as far as you- and I run the felpro head-gasket. (Stock thickness)
I also have the 3-tech performance head which is a decked head.

It runs beautifully-
This motor was just finished being transplanted into my vert project.
Here's a video of us usig a dial indicator (a device that measures how high/low you are comparatively.) oddly enough- I used one of these at my job daily for 7 years as a quality control lab for coke)
Anyways-
Never before posted video. :). I couldn't resist ;)

Long story short- you are well within acceptable squish
Please cc your head- i am very curious what it is-
I might even go so far as do the engine math for ya.
