On a 99 Ford F150 4.6L V8 I once had, I did an intake mod whereby replacing the original restrictive cold air intake tube, you took some 3" PVC and a rubber coupler and run it into the fender, same as the old, smaller diameter intake end, giving the engine greater air input. You also had to clear the computer by disconnecting the battery for a while (while putting in the mod) and it was said to give a bit more power and very slight MPG increase. It did seem to be improved by the mod on that engine. The computer automatically compensated for the extra airflow. Is the Metro OEM air intake pretty much already giving all the engine can ever use or could it benefit from this kind of a filter with the OEM one removed from inside of the air box? ![]() Oh and that was another thing I did on the F150 at the same time - I put a higher flow air filter (Spectre, similar to K&N but much lower in price) but it was a custom fit one to fit in place of the OEM filter. For the Metro, a universal style like shown above is what would be required. Edited by Cubey, Aug 23 2014, 12:57 AM.

Improving airflow would increase WOT high RPM performance, but I see no way that it would improve MPG, I suspect the opposite. A dirty air filter has pretty much the same effect as putting a bolt under your throttle pedal, which would reduce peak output power and increase MPG. Going to this kind of air filter changes more than one thing. Sound would change, introducing placebo effect, and it's also a hot air intake, which is known to increase mileage. Remember, the EXACT same intake system works perfectly well on the four cylinder. |

"Spectre, similar to K&N but much lower in price". Actually it's Spectre, made by K&N but much lower in price. |

Can you provide a link to back up your claim? |

I removed the snorkel and covered the end with 1/8 inch holed wire mesh. All to evict a "family".

How about the email information when my Spectre filter failed. I sent an email to Spectre and requested they fix the issue and then asked if they had any idea why it failed. The information was forwarded to a lady who emailed me from Knfilters. From: Nancy Wilson <NancyW@knfilters.com> To: "jon_kelley1@netzero.com" <jon_kelley1@netzero.com> Cc: "Guy Smith (Spectre)" <guy@spectreperformance.com>, "Dave Johnston (Spectre)" <davej@spectreperformance.com> Subject: defectice filter Gee, I hope that's enough for you. Oh, and I am not the one who misspelled defective!! Edited by Metromightymouse, Aug 23 2014, 10:32 AM.

As of 2011 Spectre was getting sued by K&N: http://docs.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/california/cacdce/5:2009cv01900/456450/179/0.pdf?1316675883 I was going to inject a few facts into the thread but I don't feel like arguing. Going back to lurk mode.... |

Please provide the facts. I do not believe it is argumentative to do so. |

I bought the Spectre filter for the F150 in 2010. It seems they butted heads with K&N in 2011 and lost: http://www.powersportsbusiness.com/news/2011/11/15/kn-wins-competition-lawsuit/ Maybe the 7.3 million dollar payout owed by Spectre was compensated by a takeover by K&N so they could keep their monopoly, keep from bankrupting Spectre and so they could make money off that "budget" part of the market Spectre was filling. Never underestimate when a big company will do to keep their monopoly in the marketplace. The "free market" concept is long dead.

Oh, and I guess I got my answer to the original question: "no" That's what I figured but I had to ask just in case.

I knew that Spectre was a competitor of K&N back in the early 2000's. It's news to me about the lawsuit. perhaps you are correct cubey. Maybe K&N bought them out and still makes and sells the Spectre brand. |

No way in hell am I getting dragging into this one. I will give one quick fact. The other day I looked up "Miata Supercharger" on the SOLD Ebay auctions (yes, I am thinking about starting a new project). I found 92 results. ONE was a real supercharger and the rest were electric superchargers. These were not ADs for electric superchargers, these were actual auctions where someone bought an electric supercharger within the last 60 days. I saw one that was over $170!!! Some people will believe anything. When presented with the facts they will argue and then still believe they are right. Facts no longer matter. Nuff said... |
