this was in car and driver. its older from 2010. brandnew 2010 toyota prius brandnew 2010 honda insight 1998 chevy metro with 110,000 miles 600 miles mile journey. city, highway, mountains. a/c used, driven balls to the walls....not eco driving. the metro matched the prius at 43 mpg...insight 38. not bad. http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2010-honda-insight-vs-2010-toyota-prius-1998-chevy-metro-comparison-test |

That was a fun read, especially since Knockemstiff Ohio is just a few miles down the road from me. Why anyone would intentionally go there (or go back if you already escaped once) is beyond me.

One thing I have to ask ... were they ALL automatic transmissions? If not... the metro doesn't exactly count if it's manual. If the Prius and Insight had manuals they'd be getting MUCH higher MPG I suspect. Doesn't the Prius and Insight have CVT automatic transmissions? |

the civic and the insight dont sound like a beer can rolling on metal skate wheels and they have air bags. plus power windows and locks. better stereos too |

Interesting. I am familiar with CVTs in automatic transmission scooters which are the same basic thing in design. I just watched this video which explains the CVT in cars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DldUaOWnKQM The main difference seems to be that it uses a metal belt instead of rubber like on scooters. Scooters also have rollers that move the drive pulley (engine side) outward the faster the engine turns the pulley. In a car, it's probably done electronically. The driven pulley (transmission side) has clutch shoes inside of and a bell on a scooter which engages when it begins to spin.

I swear i tried to watch the whole video, but it made me so sleepy, the way a documentary does. The robot voice, and animations help very little too. Atleast i gained some knowledge

Id punch you in the face for that comment. You can always beat a cvt, ecvt or automatic slush box. Thats why the earlier hch and the insight with stick get much better mpg. Both the insight and early hch had lean burn too. I bet if the prius and later insight had a stick they too would push triple digits. Look at the crz with stick shift Darrin drove and got 115 mpg. Which car would I want to drive balls to the wall to the middle of no where? You bet the 18 year old metro would be my first pick too.

They always put the CVTs down for better mileage on paper but my two cents is thats just for the average mindless driver who doesn't pay attention. If you are actually trying to wring every last mile out of every gallon, a traditional manual wins every time. The EPA put my 6-speed Honda CRZ at 31 city/37 hwy while rating the CVT version 35 city/39 hwy. Most of the CVT owners on CRZforum seem to get pretty close to their EPA ratings. They don't have enough control over the transmission to do any better. Meanwhile in my old fashioned, low-tech six speed, I am blowing the EPA numbers out of the water all while driving 5-9 miles over the speed limit and reaching triple digit speeds while passing people in the two-lane on my 50+ mile commutes. The CVTs can't freewheel like a manual, they can't get quite as much engine power to the wheels, they weigh more, and the driver doesn't get the same degree of control over it. The engineers are doing their best to make them better and better every year but they haven't built one that can beat me and my trusty six speed yet. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
