I gave up on chasing the timing gremlins on my car. Found a great done car at the pick n pull.

My theory is the block, head, and exhaust manifold are the same. So I grabbed the complete intake manifold, distributor, ignition coil and the entire wiring harness, including the golden brain box from the 94. If it had a plug, wire, relay or sensor, I got it.

My goal is to replace the intake manifold, timing components and brain and be able to have my skate back on the road.

What obstacles have I overlooked? ... be nice.

Compare the parts. Some of the earlier cars don't have an EGR. That might be different. Also, there were two different setups in 1994. One is called "advanced emissions" and is more like the 1995 cars. I happen to have one and it is very different from the older cars.

If the parts from the 1994 won't fit, re-use the parts from your car. I did this when swapping a 1993 engine into my 1994 advanced emissions. I had to swap an engine mount which might have been related to the fact that the donor car was an automatic, the intake manifold, and the oxygen sensor. That was it. Switching between a 1995 or earlier to a 1996 or later is a bigger deal but still very doable. You may have different distributors too.

Good bye

The front chassis harness is different also. When I installed the 93 engine in my 91 I had to change the front harness. I modified it to plug into the dash and the rear harness. I also eliminated the door lock parts of the harness, you can also remove the automatic seat belt parts also. Your 89 should have door post mounted seat belts. I gathered wiring diagrams from GMF and Teamswift for both harnesses. Open them up and repin the connectors it is not as hard as it sounds.
:cheers
