Why are my posts being deleted without explanation?
I simply responded to a post. Said nothing derogatory, demeaning or argumentative.

Because I didn't appreciate your post about porn after I specifically asked Cobb to stop talking about porn.
This thread is not about porn.
This thread is about my laptop.
If you would like to talk about my laptop, feel free.
Suggest an upgrade, etc etc. Tell me to set it on fire. Whatever.
Porn is not relevant to my thread.
So don't talk about it, and we won't have a problem.

:hmm
Did a brief google. Is the one you're talking about a desktop?
I have a desktop. It's pretty nice. It's in a box in my room. (The poor thing!)

If you live closer Id consider giving you my dell optiplex 280(SP?). It wont run win 8 or win 7 due to its video card, but it runs ubuntu just fine on 4 gb of ram and 500 gb hard drive. Best of all it still has a floppy drive. :thumb
FWIW -Optiplex 280s will run W7. There's a bios setting for video memory that has to be changed from 1mb to 8mb (there's only 2 settings). You won't be able to use the W7 Aero settings (I think). We had hundreds of 270s and dozens of 280s running W7 on 1gb ram at the school district I used to work at. They were pretty slow to boot up but ran pretty well once they got there. I'm guessing going to 2gb ram would have helped quite a lot. As would a nice solid state drive. But eventually all things get too old to bother with -even for poor school districts.

Thanks punkozuna, I was thinking of getting a low end video card as it has like a funny shaped low power power supply to run win 8. Back in the day it was fast and in the winter it doubles as a space heater. :type My other old PC is a dell e521, win vista, 4 gb ram 250 gb hard drive. Im thinking of keeping it and installing win 8.1 pro, office 13 and get 4 more gb of ram as I believe it has 8 slots. Its my moms, but she pretty much does all her computing with an ipad 2.

Mythstae, it weights like 50 lbs so shipping would be expensive. Plan B would be if you will always use a computer and want to speed them all up with a universal part consider an ssd. You can get the first gen ones fairly cheap used online of at least 50 gb usable. Granted that is small considered to todays PCs, but for linux or a basic windows install thats a lot. Then you use a 64, 128 gb thumb drive for data or an older model usb 1 or 2 external hard drive for data.

I edited my post. Sorry. I just put into words what I would do with a free laptop. I wouldnt look for anything in regards to personal info, just photos before I format and install an operating system. :cheers

Like I say, I have a nice desktop. I built it myself. Few years back. I forget the exact specs.
:hmm
I know it's a Quad-core, I wanna say 3.2GHz maybe? (mobo is upgradeable to a 6-core) (AMD CPU)
Either 8GB or 16GB of RAM
2.5TB of hard drive space
Some cheap graphics card (remember the thread where I complained about a "Sparkle" graphics card dying? One of those.) that has HDMI out.
Gigabyte mobo, I think. Pretty sure. What kind, uh, USB3? Or USB3-something? It has one USB 3.0 port built in. I added more.
Between the case, motherboard built-in ports, add on cards, etc, I have like 16 USB ports. 7-8 of them are 3.0 ports.
:hmm
Oh, and a DVD drive, and a Blu-Ray drive. ^o)
:dunno
It's nice, it's just in a box.

The laptop is just a toy to play with. :dunno

My bad, I thought you were strapped for cash and in need of a better PC. :hiding

I, my parents and brother have always had a computer since the late 90s. We sold the old home and cleaned out all the crap and found out how many PC we still had. I try to keep a back up one for myself or 2 at a time that works.

My current PC is an used amd 350 mini cube I bought online with 4 gb ram, 120 gb hard drive and a laptop external dvd, bluray drive. It didnt come that way, but thats its configuration now. Then the surface 2 is my new portable one I use for work and trainings. I go to a lot of corporate training classes that require you to sit for 8 hours and flip through a power point, word, pdf file and fill out stuff or answer questions as the class goes on.

Due to my job I get the MS HUP discount for software. Ebay gives you a similar discount if you must have MS software. :coffee

I had a nexus 7, but it was cranky and needed to be rebooted daily. Sold it and got a refurbished samsung galaxy tab 3 8 16. Love it, its also upgradable to kitkat for FREE and supports 2 apps at the same time on the same screen. :cheers

On the apple side I won an ipod mini in a contest and used it to play music in 07. I bought a used ipod touch 1 that needed a battery later on and loved it. Got some gift cards for macys from my job and used those to buy a 4th gen ipod touch. At one time that was my main "PC" for a while when my dad was in the hospital so much. I even linked a bluetooth MS keyboard to it for typing as it lacked Siri. I also collected an ipod nano that had a dead battery I used in my car. Found a recall on it and got one back the size of a postage stamp with 4 times the ram. I recently sold all that apple crap for 300 bucks. :thumb

Strapped for cash, yes. :lol
In addition to my nice desktop, I have... two? :hmm Yes, two, netbooks. An older one, Eee PC... a 901, maybe? I forget. Haven't used it in ages. It's in a drawer.
And a T91MT. I use it sometimes. But it's tiny. (Of course it's tiny, it's a Netbook!)
Then there's my parents' computer, which is what I use (typing on it right now) most of the time.
Have a tower that needs a bunch of parts to get up and running...
Umm, an old tower that I was gonna install Linux on ages ago but never bothered...
My Oldputer, specifically built for Windows 98, as a retro-machine... (The case, keyboard, mouse, and monitor, are BEIGE!)
And uh, let's see, anything else significant? :hmm
Oh and my cousin recently gave me a dead PS3, which, if I can resurrect it, I may install Linux on, as well. ^o)
It's difficult finding computer projects that require more TIME than MONEY; TIME is easier to come by!

And thanks for editing your post; while not strictly necessary, it was thoughtful of you. :)

So I just added up my cool parts I have a list of...
Excluding a new fan (may or may not need it)
If I bought my whole list, it would come to... $150.83
That's for:
Bluetooth Module (Have to check, it may have one already)
Purple Vinyl Cover (Purely for vanity of course, adds no function)
Replacement Keyboard (Also for vanity; it types fine, but several letters are worn off)
RAM (NEEDED; insufficient installed)
Battery (NEEDED; original dead)
CMOS Battery (NEEDED; original dead)
HDD (Non-SSD; for SSD add another $25)
CPU (2.1GHz; have to make sure it could even use it, some can't, apparently.)

And this isn't including the fact that several of these items have "or best offer" as an option.

So :hmm
Still can't decide if it's worth it.
Would the same money buy me a better laptop? Yes.
But to do it, I would have to save the sum total, and spend it all at once.
If I do it this way, I can upgrade one thing at a time, and never be out more than $40 on any one item.

I will, when I get paid, probably buy the battery and CMOS battery, though.
$13 for the battery, $5 for the CMOS.

Well, I guess the real question for you to answer is, do you want a decent laptop or just something to putz with? You're starting with an under-equipped, worn out piece of junk and you will end up with an expensive, under-equipped worn out piece of junk. :shit Don't waste your time and money... they are BOTH finite whether you believe it or not. You have a closet full of computers that you worked on in the past; what did it get you? :smackface I would respectfully suggest changing your old patterns. If you want a decent laptop, save up for a refurb with good specs. If you want to go retro, get a #2 pencil and a stenographer's pad. :shake

I just re-read all the posts in this thread because I am bored (0800 hrs here and no one is awake yet - birthday party last night and there are drunks laying everywhere). I was considering sending you an extra working laptop that I had sitting here but I see you already have a few extra computers at this point. Anyway, two things came to mind:

1) You said you are dead broke. Why are you messing around with trying to fix a spare laptop? You need to get some money saved up so you are not dead broke any longer. I look at everything in terms of money (yes, an annoying habit) but reading your posts and reading between the lines a bit I am slowly understanding your situation. Broke people do stupid things with their money out of desperation and fixing this laptop is not the smartest thing in the world. It should be the absolute last thing on your list on which to spend money. I hope I am not offending you because it is not my goal at all. I like you and wish the best for you or I would not be trying to help.

2) Does your TV in the back room have HDMI? Do you have WiFi? I would suggest selling some computer stuff and buying a $35 Chromecast (I see they have them at Walmart now but I bought mine off Ebay for $29 shipped). It would allow you and your family to watch free movies/youtube on the TV.

I am not insulted by your advice.
All my computers were bought/built back when I was still a military wife.
Ergo, the paychecks kept coming.
Oh, except for the tower that needs stuff, I traded my nephew a wacom for that.
(Which I had gotten when... You guessed it... I was a military wife.)

Streaming is not an option for us.
Our internet is satellite, and it is metered.
By which I mean, we get only 10GB of data per month.
Had to pay extra for 10 instead of 5, too.
It's a step up from the dial-up we previously had.

Oh there is no shortage of movies here.
There are just some things that come from the internet, that it would be nice to watch on a TV.
:dunno
