The Genius Who Descended Into the Metro

When I park, cut the engine, and leave my windows rolled up and the car is in the heat for a bit, I noticed that the interior smells like gas vapor.

Any ideas on what this could be?

I had a gas can in the back a few years ago that spilled a little bit, but that all evaporated off quite some time ago and I wasn't getting any gas odor and now I've been getting it.

When was the last time you changed out your fuel filter? It might be "backin" up and some fumes escaping. Better yet, there might be a loose fuel line. Tomorrow, crawl underneath and take a close look at all the fuel lines. Maybe one is rotted or a fitting is loose.

Loose fuel cap or sticky fuel injector :dunno

I think the last time my wife mentioned it I added some Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas and it went away. :-/

Bad gas cap, defective evap system, gas leak. Start with looking under the hood for gas leaks at all fuel hoses. Sometimes small pin holes can get in fuel lines or hose clamps cut the hoses and they leak under pressure, the fuel evaporates but you smell it before it does. It is a good idea to replace these fuel lines on these old cars with new ones.

Carry a fire extinguisher in your car someplace you can get to easily. No really. Especially if you're smelling gas! A lightly burned car is better than a completely burned car.

I carry TWO fire extinguishers in my small motorhome when traveling in it. One is inside under the drivers seat and the other is in the outside accessible cargo bay.

I'm big on fire safety so I like to keep fire extinguishers around.

Fill the tank completely full and set it out in the hot sun. Any leaks might be more visible that way.
