Hello, I am a soon to be 1995 geo metro owner if everything goes correctly. I have two threads already if you wouldn't mind chiming in, I have a thread concerning maximizing my fuel economy here: http://geometroforum.com/topic/5621268/1/ and then this thread talks about what to look for before I buy it: http://geometroforum.com/topic/5621270/1/

Thanks,
Caden

Are you going to USU? I used to work at Morris VW in downtown Logan while I was going to engineering school up on the hill. Still have a picture of Old Main on my office wall.

Be picky about choosing a car. Read the buying guide on the forum, and take your time. I bought a good low-rust body and have spent some time fixing the other things, but once you get one of these cars running right, it'll be good for a long time. A rusty car will never be good. Pay particular attention to the front frame horns that the lower control arms attach to.

I had to drive 400 miles to pick mine up, and I still think it was worthwhile. You aren't really too far from the California coast, and there are lots of good rust-free cars in California!

Welcome to your new forum, cknight199! :coffee

You said: "It states that I want the best milage possible, and am willing to trade off power, but I want to be able to cruise at 80 mph (speed limit). That may be unrealistic, I simply just don't know if it is or not. Could I swap the gears or anything to get a higher top end speed at lower RPM?"

So if the car is an automatic then you might want to keep looking. With the automatic you could lower it to get less air flowing under the car, add an air dam, and put taller tires on it. However at 80 mph you are still going to have high rpms and fuel mileage probably in the low 40s. :dunno

In Logan you may still have to check the car for frame rot and rust if they salt the roads there. Metro Buyer's Info

Okay found another Geo, 3 cylinder, 5 speed manual. asking $1100, 182,000 miles on it. How does that sound? He said it passed safety and emissions 3 months ago, has good snow tires on it, he said the motor hasn't used any oil and he changed it 3,000 miles ago. What are your thoughts on that?

I wasn't aware of the rust problem with the Geo's until now, good to know. Where exactly are the "frame horns"

Check out this thread!! It shows you perfection! Usually this is something you only read about in Metro fiction and never see. The horns are the extension of the frame in the front. One on each side of the engine/transmission. The lower control arms attach to the bottom and the drive axles go through the hole.

Welcome! If you live in an area that requires emissions testing, make any offer contingent upon it passing inspection. Don't take the owner's word for it.

$1100 is not a bad price. :dunno :gp

Go take a look at it. The oil should still be clear and at the top of the scale on the dip stick. He should have papers on the emissions. The engine will be clean. It would be nice if you could do a compression check: http://geometroforum.com/topic/2574993/1/

At $1100 asking he might go for $900. That's how it works. Put $900 in one pocket and $200 (four $50 bills) in another.

Check for rust, batter date, plug wire cracks, clean interior, unless he has receipts it will cost about $100 for new plug wires, plugs, distributor/rotor. Expect a few dents.

I am the one on the left.

Welcome.
Stop by on your way back to logan- I'm in West Valley/Kearns.
Not in the market myself, but the seller, or someone before him installed a sunroof, and newer metro seats.
Only one picture, so I can't see the exterior, or engine bay.
Your odo will only read to 5 digits.
I welcome you to our little metro family.
Are you native to logan, or just going to school there?
Logan does not require emissions, but does require safety.
With the car being from spanish Fork Utah, its not likely to have bad framehorns.
Utah cars rarely develop framhorn rust.
Welcome again.

Im attending up at Utah State, and the truth of the matter is I also have a duramax that I use to drag race, but blew the motor up about a month ago making a 12.1 pass at the strip. :( I knew it was coming, but figured I should get a commuter car for school so the duramax doesn't rust away in logan (I am pretty OCD about it) plus the new motor will be built and have to be re-ringed every 30,000 miles or so. So I get the best of both worlds, fast high horsepower truck, and fuel efficient Geo Metro LOL.

The seller sounds very honest and told me he bought it from a guy, and that the head looked to have been rebuilt.
