I wish I could afford a Tesla. Here is a link to the article and an excerpt from it: Tesla originally ruled out California due to the state’s high tax burden and cost of living, but the prospect of abundant lithium from the Salton Sea helped jettison the state back into the running. http://www.desertsun.com/story/money/2014/09/03/tesla-picks-nevada-massive-battery-factory/15033507/ |

So much money involved here. What would it be like to manage and direct so much. Millions and millions. |

Kinda funny... I just read another article that said EV sales have leveled off and are mediocre.. I guess Tesla has something different in mind. A shop just a few doors down from me just moved to NV, and I see lots of people doing the same. CA is chasing away a lot of business and revenue, and does not understand that business is the goose that lays the golden egg. They are trying to eat the goose, but can't see that this will stop the golden eggs. |

That's what's broken about the US... some states act as tax havens... the ones with almost existing economy (such as Arizona, and arguably NV aside from Las Vegas and to a lesser extent, Reno) and dirt poor people. The money doesn't stay there though. Especially at the site of the industries. Just look at the east/southeastern Texas oil fields. When I was traveling through there back in October of last year, I stopped at many local, free history museums run by long time local residents of the area, mainly along the stretch of highway between Lubbock and Odessa. I think it was the one in Seminole, TX that the man running the museum "brags", in a bitter ironic way, how they are the richest county in the Texas (for oil production and the money produced from it), but the poorest county in the state (for per capita income). As he put it: "We're both the richest and the poorest county in Texas". The money doesn't stick around. Usually states with very low cost of living and low taxes are that way because it's usually a crap hole place to live. Arizona and Nevada are prime examples. The saying "you get what you pay for" goes for taxes, too. The less taxes you pay, the less you're going to see being done. Edited by Cubey, Sep 4 2014, 01:29 PM.

Many people are being displaced in these oil boom towns by landowners that evict the tenants or sell off in order to cash in on the bid up rents so they don't have to wait for the lease agreement to expire. |

Companies are leaving Cali, people are leaving Cali (except for illegals) and their economy is a basket case. It's a great example to anybody to see how not to run a state. Kinda like that old song goes...."Tax the rich to feed the poor, till there are no rich no more" Then where will the jobs come from?? |

Don't think I'd ever live in Cali. Fires, mudslides, earthquakes, huricanes, horrible traffic, state tax, and gangs. |

I wouldn't mind living in Cali IF I was looking for a free ride. One of the most generous welfare states in the country and nice weather too! |

The plant may be $5 billion, but Tesla's share of that is only going to be $2 billion. The rest comes from the taxpayer. |

That figure for the plant is suspicious. The Hyundai plant I work in has right around $1.4 billion invested in it, we crank out 350,000 cars a year, and we have some of the most advanced tech around. Number seems high. |

I think it is battery and rolling chassis....another article showed a photo of a flat chassis with wheels on it and it looked like the whole bottom of it was fitted with thin batteries. |

I was a long haul trucker back in the nineties with my last wife, and we loved riding our Harleys on our off time. We had the opportunity to see every state, and we often fantasized about where we would settle down and live when it was time to stop our gypsy lifestyle. We figured out that Northern CA was one of the most beautiful places to live, and we chose it out of several beautiful places based on the climate. We chose ultimate Harley country when the time came to come off the road, but we were not into politics enough to understand what kind of mess we chose to live in. Strong Christian values that taught me right from wrong, and that money and things were not mine unless I earned them, kept me from seeing that I was moving to a state where the majority had different values when it came time to vote. I have had my eyes on the border ever since I figured out what was going on. If my EV business ends up going somewhere, there will be a for sale sign in front of my house, and a moving truck in front of my shop... |

I wonder if there will be enough surplus batteries manufactured to have some available to other EV businesses besides Tesla? |

They have been saying "California is broke!" for 20 years and yet..... it lives on. When CA tries to create jobs, such as the high speed rail project, people scoff at it being "money wasted". |
