Oh, that. Kind of a surprise to run into someone right here on the forum with firsthand knowledge of what they do or don't have, but thanks for clearing that one up!

Area 51 has a new hanger and 2 new run ways, FYI. Still, some secret stuff is kept up in the air. If you lived in an area with an active monitoring cell tower, that means there is a sleeper group near you or your community.

Only if you allow for assumptions to be substituted for what you actually know, and only one of us was claiming to "know" anything about it... I don't know anything about any non-aircraft stuff they have there, so I don't assume anything about it.Don't know a single solitary thing about any of the hangars out there. Doesn't surprise me that a 55+ yr old facility that is constantly starting new programs might occasionally need to build a new hangar or two or three. But, I believe the last "new" runway at Area 51/Groom Lake was actually one existing taxiway re-purposed as a runway about 12 years ago - RWY 12-30. The replacement for the "long" runway was completed 20+ years ago (14L-32R) and included a "curved" ~3 mile overrun out into the lake bed (the "hook") for A12s (progeny aircraft to the SR-71) to use in an emergency, and the original long runway (14R-32L) with the straight overrun out into the dry lake bed closed completely more than 10 years ago. Then there are the two sets of parallel (actually adjacent) runways marked off out in the dry lake bed (9-27 and 3-21) that date back to the early 60s. There was a new relatively short runway built almost 10 years ago near Yucca Lake at the south end of the Yucca Flats nuclear test range (Area 6 I think?) that is thought to have been used extensively for UAV/Drone testing and there are flights in and out by Lockheed-Martin single engine turboprops, most likely used to ferry company personnel in and out. Unless you have pictures or references to documentation of a newer runway in one of the test complexes? Would love to learn about them as I have a little interest in aircraft test facilities. And I have no idea if the cell tower on the hill across from us is "an active listening tower" or not, but not much exciting in our neck of the woods in the way of international terrorism unless you consider a lot of good country folk with lots of guns a "sleeper cell!"

People eat this shit up too. What hell kind of "secret" air craft needs a "long" runway with a 3 mile over shoot area? The kind made out of lead. Listening cell phone tower, LOL. They collect the intelligence on the back end, not the front end. Its likely that was a back up unit or being tested while the investigation took place for the article. What the gov has is at least 30 years ahead of what you can buy on the market. Take the most advance piece of technology and apply 30 mo years of advancements and thats what you are dealing with.

The kind that are still subject to the known laws of physics. And the ones we know about are normally made out of aluminum and/or titanium if you were wondering. While a few of the earlier jet aircraft tested at Groom Lake occasionally used the overrun into the lake bed, it was the A-12 (SR-71) test program that needed the extreme distances the most and drove the major length expansion. An SR-71 normally may be landing somewhere around 200 mph and as much as 50,000 lbs or more. Since that results in a little more inertia than a Metro, it's kind of easy to understand how some people don't really get what it's like to touch down and stop from 300 feet per second or even 400 fps in something that might weigh 50,000 to 100,000 lbs. Maybe with all systems operating normally, and sometimes maybe not. Safe to say that the professional test pilots and engineers that recommended the length of runways and overruns they needed out there knew a bit more about "that " than most (all?) of us. During flight testing (which is what they do there) there are plenty of opportunities for abnormal landings, both planned in order to test and define limitations and normal and emergency procedures as well as those that occur due to unplanned actual emergencies such as hydraulics, fight control, and braking system failures. It's a given that the plane would likely have to have been landed at weights approaching 150,000 lbs to test emergency landings immediately after takeoff, and probably some conducted as high as 300 mph. Go out and drive down the highway in your Metro at 300 mph and 100,000 lbs and see how long it takes to stop. Then try it without brakes. Then let's talk about how much runway and overrun you would like to have. Take a newer 747 that has to accelerate to nearly 200 mph when it's taking off at 900,000+ lbs, then do an aborted takeoff (emergency stop) and stop with brakes worn to the maximum serviceable limit. And pray the ABS type system is working properly and the pilots are skilled and disciplined enough to use it properly when the hits the fan for real. It might just give you a whole new appreciation of the actual distances required to safely stop something that big and/or fast. FWIW, even a relatively smallish business jet landing @ 12,000 lbs or so with a hydraulic system failure without flaps or normal brakes and a limited supply of emergency braking air in gusty wind conditions can easily "eat up" as much as 10,000+ feet to stop from a landing at 200+ mph, and I can tell you from more than one personal experience that an extra mile of runway would have been quite nice to have in those circumstances. I'm just sayin' that maybe if you knew what those types of aircraft operations actually involved, (or knew enough to know what you don't know and had even a little respect for what the professionals out there do), you might have a different perspective on the whole thing.

There is a company called Crown Castle that makes its money buying up small plots of land and building towers on them. They then try to lease the towers to cellular providers. Many of the towers you see are owned by CC. Its possible the towers in question are owned by CC and are not operational or are being used for test purposes. Also, at night carriers will sometimes reconfigure a set of towers to do propagation tests. Its possible the towers in question were detected in this state. Also, carriers do set up experimental networks sometimes for evaulation purposes. And finally, towers do break down or can become non operational. For example a tower may be transmitting bogus parameters which could cause it to appear invalid. It happens. Any of these reasons could explain the situation. |

If you really know much about our 80 year old air craft you know the last place they are launched is NV. Second, no one is diverting a 747 with brake issues to area 51 to use the runway to land. BULLCRAP!!!!!!!!

I was talking about an aircraft that is roughly 60 years old and actually isn't "launched' anywhere anymore (SR-71). And the 747 example was a takeoff example, and I thought maybe an example of the types of situations that are part of everyday commercial operations might help you understand better. I tried, I failed, I apologize! Sorry Cobb, you seem like a bright, cool guy, but you really don't know about this subject! If you did, I would imagine you could provide an explanation based on your knowledge and experience in engineering and/or flight testing high performance aircraft (simplified for those of us who don't understand any of this of course) of why the whole Groom Lake runway/overrun situation is a all wrong, and also provide us with some specific numbers as to what the runway lengths really should be out there to get the job done safely. For a bonus, maybe you could also explain how the brilliant and supremely skilled engineers and test pilots that have done that work out there in the desert for decades failed to learn what you apparently have? |

Ehhh, they don't need any runways at area 51, flying saucers are VTOL capable. |

When I was in Iraq, OIF you couldn't find the FOB easily on Google Earth as it just wasn't labeled during that time!, until after the war. However in Afghanistan you could Google earth and get directions from Moscow all the way to the gate in Bagram air base, yet they seem to take security on that base more seriously . Labeled clearly. FOB Salerno was attacked using google earth, and Area 51 is easily found also. About flying saucers, that is technology the Nazis developed and kept secret, so we took it and kept secret.. Nothing more than an electron rocket employed. No aliens... No aliens raping/abducting, that's all deception played out on feeble minds that believe crap Edit: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MwUpPwyyvLw Now let me take off my tinfoil hat, and think about something else.

what about the plane loads of passengers who work at the groom lake facility? they fly them in from las vegas regularly. they also fly in almost all supplies to support the personnel who run the joint. the conspiracy theorists who watch the area don't report many truck deliveries out there in the desert and what few they do see are usually military convoys. to support what myredvert was getting at about the development of technology, the government (or some function of) funds lots of advanced voodoo. the smart card technology which provides coding and security to satellite tv providers was developed by the air force to make logistics easier. they would send palletized shipments of materials with smart cards in little pockets on the loads. handlers could pull the smart cards out, scan them, and have all of the logistical information they needed in a heartbeat. that technology came out of wright patterson, you know, where they store the frozen aliens from roswell. i had a nice long chat with the guy who developed smart cards for the air force when he was retired but still teaching classes at wright state university. when grain of rice transponder technology was developed the government released all of the technical development info to anyone who wanted to use it or advance the tech, free of charge and with no patent restrictions. now, grain of rice transponder tech is all over the place. you can have your pet "chipped" at your local veterinarian and the transponders are embedded in chrysler car parts to cut down on thefts. it was a natural progression, since owner information is wanded into every grain of rice transponder on car parts when you buy a new chrysler product, that the international border crossings would get drive by transponder readers. oh, sorry, those readers don't do that, they are there for reading the grain of rice transponders on commercial carriers' loads to make nafta easier to use. ![]() damn! this is fun.

Alot of it is disinformation. For example on many of the air bases they use cutouts of fake air craft they would lay down and when the other countries satellite flew over it would pick up the heat signature of the cutout and it looks like a new plane the other guy was working on. Must like the next car being put into product, they hide in plane sight.
