I like to plan way ahead for stuff when I find stuff cheap and that I think I may need later. I bought a nice big winter scarf for $2 yesterday during upper 70's temps but hey, it's not going to last forever! When it's cold, I won't be able to find one for less than $10 used probably! Anyhoo... seeing as how 12" rims are pretty far outdated and hard to find snow chains for, I have been on the look out for a set. Yesterday I found some for $5 in the box! They will also fit 13" ones for the Metro, should I decide to change my wheels later on. They don't even look used, which I suspect is the case with 80% of "used" snow chains out there. People buy them "just in case" then never use them. Maybe I won't either, but at least I only have $5 in them instead of $40-50! The red paint is chipped away some on the two connecter ends. but that isn't even the part that would touch the ground. They just got banged up over the years in the box being moved around. The chains themselves are smooth. ![]() ![]() ![]()

If you do much skiing up Snoqualmie, these could come in really handy! |

The local Goodwill usually has a few sets of the fancy diamond pattern chains at around $7 a pair. |

I doubt I'll ever do any skiing... but I still might find myself around WA or OR when snow chains are in season. For the $5 price (plus $9 for new bungee tensioners it needs), I can't go wrong. Trying to find them in the dead of winter for under $20 would be impossible. Even under $50 would be rough! During certain times of the year in OR, you are legally required to carry chains with you. Back in early March when I was on my way up here from Sacramento, I checked the weather in the passes along I5 in OR and they were all WELL above freezing with no rain or snow expected so I just went on through without chains with me in my motorhome and I never saw a drop of rain until Portland, well past all the bad mountain passes. |

This is the first set I have seen in 3 weeks of looking to fit 12" wheels. Maybe there's lots out there but I doubt it. Finding a set in 3 months when they are in high demand would be rough. Maybe next spring they'd be around but by then, I wouldn't need them. |

You won't need them around here unless, as was mentioned, you want to go over the pass. But if you put on studded snow tires, your Metro will be a BEAST in the snow. About every five years or so we get hammered with a serious snowfall, and this area is always so unprepared for it everything just shuts down and people stay home. The last couple years we haven't gotten more than a dusting during the winter. There was one day last winter where we got about 3" and I put on my studs, and they were off the next day. Snow doesn't hang around here. What falls overnight is usually gone by noon the next day. |

A lot of people who live down south (and overseas) think I've moved to Siberia, the way they talk about how cold and wintery it is up here. I guess it would seem that way if I lived up in the Cascades someplace... but not down here! I just figured they'd be good to have. They may set in the coat closet for the next 5 years now collecting dust, but at least I don't have to go hunting for any should I go on a winter trip that takes me through mountains.

It will get fairly cold at times, but for the most part it will be about 39 and raining all winter. I hate snow, so it's one of the reasons I like living here. Being right on the Puget Sound keeps the temps coastal and temperate. The other side of the Cascades, however, are another story. Snow city over there. Sure can't hurt to have them, and now that I have said something we are probably gonna get five feet of snow this year. |

In southwest Arkansas it can get into the teens at night (even single digits sometimes!) with snow on occasion, but it just gets ice mostly. This was in January 2011. It didn't stay too awfully long though:

Should look like that in a few weeks up here. Ground freezes end of September, first snow fall by the first week of October.....and it stays until April. And ....cold is -30 or below. If you can't drive with studded snow tires, your metro won't get around with chains ........they don't have the ground clearance. Lots of us up here don't even bother with snow tires, just all seasons will do the trick. |
