So I hear the PO is loosing money, laying off, closing locations, moving sorting facilities, hiring contractors, reducing contractor pay, limiting service to a few days a week. I hear about not offering door delivery but a central mail box like in most apartment complexes unless you pay extra. Now I see commercials about delivery on Sunday because the PO cares?!?!?! So its mail delivery 7 days a week or is is packages only on Sunday?

Packages will be delivered on Sunday in certain markets. Not every city/town will get this service right now, but soon enough most of the U.S. will get Sunday parcel delivery. We had a stand-up talk with a video from the Postmaster General yesterday. Guess what we will begin to deliver...........wait for it.............wait...........wait............. Groceries. Yep, he stated that in the San Francisco area the postal service will be delivering your groceries between 3am and 7am. Don't ask me how or why but it seems to me that if you order some ice cream at 3am and receive it at 7am you might end up with milk. From what I gleaned from the PMG's video, our #1 priority will be focusing on package delivery. We are getting new hand held scanners which will take a pic of the address and immediately relay that information along with the GPS coordinates to let the sender know what time the package was delivered and where it was left. Big brother is really breathing down the neck of the working man, now. Edited by dayle1960, Sep 6 2014, 06:17 AM.

With all due respect for what you do Dayle, and thank you by the way for the fine service you and and your local to me fellow postal workers provide... If "big brother" is responsible for ensuring better accountability and obtaining more detailed tracking information to provide the customer, then I'm all for it! The service the USPS provides us should never be taken for granted, and I for one dread the day we may lose it. Maybe it's just the yungins' who haven't experienced a lifetime of continuous reliable service that don't realize how good we have it, or those who don't consider what the "retail" guys like UPS and FedEx will charge for basic package delivery when their main competition is gone and they have a monopolized free reign over us? On days when no one would dare drive up icy steeply graded driveways and UPS and FedEx dumped large enough to be noticed boxes full of Christmas presents, cards, and money next to the road beside the garbage cans, our Postal Workers will usually walk through 500 feet of deep snow covered yard to get the package to our door, because they believe it's the right thing to do for "their neighbors" that they have a responsibility to serve every single day. Think we'll get that kind of personal caring and service from one of "the big guys?" Just sayin'

The funny thing is is that we are delivering packages for FedEx and UPS. They drop ship a pallet or two to our dock every day and we deliver the packages. So if you guys are using those two companies, be sure to ask who the "end deliver" will be. If you are paying a high amount for delivery, then maybe by going to the Post Office might save you a few bucks. BTW, did you realize that within twenty years you will no longer be getting mail delivery to your front door? It will become more cost effective if the Post office plants a cluster box in the middle of a street and give everybody on that street a key to an individual box within that cluster module. The mail man will drive up to the cluster box, throw the mail in, and leave. You will get to walk the dog down to the cluster box to retrieve your mail. How's that for service? It will save a bunch of bucks but the customers will be extremely pissed, I bet. Edited by dayle1960, Sep 7 2014, 08:29 PM.

Yeah, I hate it when the "other" shipping companies use the PO to go the last few miles to your door. Maybe you guys make money from it and it helps to keep you afloat? |

Amazon has a few drop locations where you can go and pick up your package. Im more of an ebay guy. I dont have to shop for other stuff that "qualifies" for free shipping if I spend more than 35 bucks. |

@ Dayle, when I moved to the Seattle Burbs from the east coast, I discovered they use cluster boxes around here in all the neighborhoods... and it rains all winter long. I was pissed and could not believe it really saves much, and felt like I was going back in time to the darkages. I also think they (cluster boxes) are ugly (no matter how nice the boxes) and an eyesore on the street. I didn't like them at all. However, After living with them for several years now, it is really a non issue. Probably even good for folks to walk a few steps. All in All, I'm still not sure how much it saves in time and gas, but I can live with it..... although... lots are small here and so houses close together thus not a long walk...
