Got my Buick back; Just wish it was in better shape.

Some of you might remember my ranting about letting a friend borrow my 2000 Buick Park Avenue for a while. And in that time it has had a tree branch fall on it, denting the roof, and a damaged L/F corner and busted headlight from a not-his-fault fender bender. Now neither of those were his fault, so I won't hate him for it. And he never could come up with the money to buy it from me. Well, he and his wife recently moved to Cleveland and he left the car at his in-laws with the keys for me to take back. Nice of him eh? He even told me he cleaned the interior out. Nice guy. So I go get my car, I sat in it and almost wretched. The smell! It smelled like wet dog. It freakin reeked! And when driving it home, I noticed quite a vibration at 40-45 mph. And the steering pump was noisy. It always leaked a little but it got a lot worse. Oh, and he left it with a pretty much empty tank. Isn't that nice? You lend a buddy your car for a few months, and he couldn't even fill it up before he gives it back. But when I got it home, I decide to start cleaning it out. The interior is tan w/ tan leather, But there were areas inside that were nearly as black as the tires. Took me two days with a vacumn and carpet cleaner to get the interior cleaned. There was trash under the seats. I found a handful of cigarette butts under the console. Some still had burned out cherrys on them. Luckily, there weren't any burns in the interior. But after two days of vacumning and scrubbing, the interior looks really good. I'm surprised at how well my carpet cleaner did at getting the stains out. The stink is gone too. And in the last few days, I've made a few repairs. I changed the oil. I replaced a worn out tie-rod, replaced a front wheel bearing, which fixed the vibration at 40-45. I gave it an alignment. But I gotta fix the steering leak, and it needs a brake job soon. He replaced a rotor and pads on the L/F, but didn't touch the other side. Yes, he only replaced the pads on ONE SIDE. That's wall of shame stuff right there. I even found a headlight at a junkyard the other day and installed it easily. And even though it's got just over 200K on the odometer, it still runs, drives, and rides real good. I've decided to keep the car for a while. But I'm not letting anyone borrow it ever again.

I don't guess you found the pads for the other side in the trunk either, huh? :lol

Have you ever lost your wallet, and found it later with your money still in it? Nope. I gotta get all new pads, front and rear, and redo it all the right way. I just hope all the rotors are still good enough to be resurfaced.

The only wallet I've ever lost was when I was about 8 years old and it had no money in it. It was in a very small hospital and yet.. somehow, somebody decided to keep it. It was obviously a kids wallet.. some people *shakes head*

All it had in it was a library card and my name, address and home phone number. You know.. the usual stuff kids used to have in case they somehow got lost.

Now if any of you are wondering, no, I'm not going to disown my best friend for leaving me a filthy car. Am I a little upset? Yes. But it is just a car. Not worth losing a friend over. He's like a brother to me. The guy had some hard times. He's an Iraq Veteran like me. He faced some bad stuff. And he worked hard to make ends meet. Plus he has child support to worry about.
