Well I guess I should clarify myself and offer a mea culpa if I have mislead anyone. I should have said that I "topped it off" with about 1/2 jug of straight antifreeze when I changed the t stat that was in fact stuck open.

The fact remains that before I made this change I was getting very poor heat
To clarify your clarification, the fact remains you were getting poor heat with your thermostat stuck open, and good heat after you replaced it.

The amount you changed the mix by topping off with straight anti freeze had nothing to do with the heat improving. ;)

define cold?
it gets -30 up here.
they are great in the snow.
studded snow tires on all 4, or not.
lots of us in alaska just run all seasons on our cars.
hey Hanny, if he is up in the mountians, he might have us both beat. (we had well over 100 days below zero last year )

NUMBER ONE for winter: Good battery.

if it wont start, the rest is not that important.

also, if you get a chance, check your tank. they are notorious for rust holes, often near the vent nipple. this will allow condensation and therefore water to have a route into the fuel system.

I'll change the thermostat in Great White because I notice it creeping high when I'm at idle this last summer. Metroid is due an oil change this month. Mellow Yellow is getting everything checked out. PO sez he ran it with synthetic oil.
Ready for winter? Just the normal stuff everyone does (of course, I grew up in Colorado so normal to me is not normal to Floridians).

If any of the cars have 10W30, change it to 5W30, 0W30, or 0W40. I personally have been running Mobil 1 0W40 European year round without issues. Should be good in extreme cold and extreme hot.

The lifters are sensitive in these cars and you can burn valves if the oil is too thick. I would only run 10W30 in a very hot climate.
