Hi, I'm new to the forum after a bit of lurking...

I have a 1978 Reliant Kitten, after blowing up a few Reliant 850cc motors, I decided to have a G10 motor mated to a Jimny box installed. Mainly because of the weight - I'm restricted to 550kg due to arcane British driving laws.

Welcome to your new forum, Nitrowing! :coffee

Great looking car. :thumb :thumb Thank you for the pictures.

So you make weight and pick up a few cc's, eh. Excellent.

There's a well known modification for the Reliant motors, the aluminium intake manifold from the SU carb is poorly designed, so a few owners cut out the connecting walls of the manifold to allow scavenging between the ports. The exhaust manifold is cast iron and never lines up to the ports.
I decided that the intake mod was too crude and went for something a bit more 'engineered' - similar to this Posted Image

So, after 70 hours with a Dremel matching all the intake and exhaust ports and gaskets, I put the top end back together and drove the car to work. In Aberdeen. 8 hours away. This was in my Kitten estate

Well, as I'm sure you're aware, sitting at 70mph gets boring and by the time I'd crossed the river Forth in Scotland, I was just about ready to eat my steering wheel.
So, maybe it's time to try the top speed on this little box...
I was coming in to Aberdeen at 92mph (GPS) flat out for 7 miles on the dual carriageway checking out the faces of the grey-boring-box owners as I hurtled past - a happy man I am.

Then I took my foot off the gas to coast in to the city... and the engine died... and wouldn't start... and I drove the last 3 miles on the starter motor in 2nd gear and revving the 'nads off it every time it struck up....

Every single valve was burnt out... maybe should have checked my mixture :lol

Thanks :)
I have another, a 1969 Reliant Rebel -

It used to have the old 700cc motor but it's got a 52bhp race tuned 850cc in it which I took up to GPS 82mph one day but the pinion bearing collapsed while sitting at 65mph on the motorway. The only diff I could get was from a Rebel van which is geared completely differently - I've had to put 14" wheels from a Morris Minor (not pictured) on to get it to do 70mph :shake

There's currently 130 Kittens and 26 Rebels left on the road.
So - 40 years ago we had a 4 seater small car that would do 50mpg - where has technology got us today?

The Metro remains the benchmark here in the states. I retrofit Metros with something better, but I don't see any new cars being sold that can beat a Metro in efficiency.
