I'm new; been lurking a week or two

Hi guys, I'm new to the world of Geo Metro. Just acquired a 96 4 cyl. Automatic as my daily driver. It has 48 K miles on it and the only other owner was a lady who just went into a nursing home, whose family sold it to a local used car lot. It has been repainted it's original dark green, sometime within the last year or so, the car lot put a new head liner in it, and I bought it the day it showed up on the lot. The engine runs great, it shifts well, and it looks like it is on it's way to getting north of 35 MPG. I do my own maintenance, for the most part; oil changes, filters breaks, hoses belts, alternator replacement, transmission fluid changes, stuff like that. I am not a mechanic, but I don't do a half bad imitation of one.
I have been lurking for a week or two, and I just wanted to say how helpful an informative this forum is! From choosing the right synthetic oil, to fixing the rear door that won't open, to a future headlight upgrade and seat upgrade, I have found all of the information that I could possibly use on this site. I wanted to thank everyone on here for the help and info. I look forward to learning even more from you fine people! :cheers

Welcome scope64. You will soon find out that we are a fun bunch of guys and gals who love these little cars. Sounds like you got a great metro, seeing how a little old lady drove it. She probably didn't run it hard, so the engine should have a lot of life left in it.

I would suggest to change the motor oil, flush the tranny oil, change the radiator fluid and pull the fuel filter. Small things like this will improve the performance of your new whip.

Glad you joined. Please keep us posted on your endeavors.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'll get photos of it posted when I get good shots of it.
The first thing I did to it was change the oil. The last oil change was only 2000 miles ago, but it was also over a year ago. I took advice from this forum and gave it Mobile1 5W-30 Synthetic, and a Bosch oil filter. I changed the air filter. The coolant and transmission fluid are next. I have a Haynes manual on the way, and then I will do the fuel filter and stuff like that. Then I'll mess with the rear passenger side door that won't open, and go to the u - pull and see if I can find some upgrade front seats. By then I'm sure something else will break and need attention!

Argh! :smackface
Haynes and Chilton are no good.
Look for a Factory Service Manual, if you can...

see if I can find some upgrade front seats
Suzuki Esteem seats. Drop-in replacement.

:hmm Is your car a hatchback or a sedan?

Haynes? Paper is very good for insulation. Crumple it up and stick it in your coat.

OK, seriously, I installed a G10 with just a Chilton but the timing instructions were :shit "Be sure the timing marks are aligned." There are two pairs, not one. No pictures. :banghead Also the diagram for the spark plug wires is WRONG.

1996? Click on http://www.ebay.com/1996+geo+metro+manual+service or http://www.ebay.com/1996+geo+metro+manual+shop and I see the two green books are about $37 shipped. About what I paid for ours. :)

It's a sedan. It looks like a car, only smaller.
I never even heard of the Suzuki Esteem until I started reading here. Now, it's my next junk yard target!
As for the Haynes manual, it's just what I'm familiar with. I've read here about their limitations, and if I become more advanced in my endeavors, I will look into getting the FSM.
This forum, and you folks are the bomb! I can always find the information and advice that I need instantly.

That is the thing about the FSM, Haynes/ Chilton assumes a lot of knowledge on your part, for some reason the FSM seems to assume none except the ability to read and decipher diagrams. It is a good value at $50 or $100, the Haynes/ Chilton is worth about $2.50 to $5.00.

Sorry, it was just too good to let go. And then the image search found such a cute goat, which led to cute goats, which led to a funny goat, and then it got serious...

I've used Haynes to help me keep my metro fleet running & for other cars/trucks I have owned.

What it doesn't have, I just pop on GMF, search & find the solution. :thumb
