Hey guys, first time poster here, but it is certainly not the last(love geos, have only owned geos haha :P ). Anyway, I am wanting to completely remodel the sound system in my 93 geo metro, which only has the four basic crappy speakers in it. This would be my first time in doing a project like this, and I don't really want to spend the extra couple hundred dollars to get it installed. I have not yet bought any supplies, and am in need of info on a lot of things.

First of all, what type of equipment would suffice? I certainly want some bass, but only enough to hear in the car that has good quality, and not something that would cause my baby to fall apart lol. And with the sub, what amp could run off the geo's power without needing some sort of alternate source? Money-wise, I am willing to spend around $200, because I will need to save up for a few months. How about the speakers? They seem easy to take out, but I just want to get equipment that coincide with each other so I don't have to buy different gear. That is probaby all the information I would like for now, but will definitely be back for help on installation of all of this. Thanks for your time!

$200 will be enough to get you a solid head unit, install kit, and 2 pairs of lower end 4" speakers. Figure another $200, at minimum, for a decent sub, box, amp, and install kit.

Yeah after reading more in to other sites rather than amazon, my wallet cringed a little :-/ . But it is a worthwhile investment I suppose, 400 bucks shouldn't be too bad... Any thoughts on what I should install?

I'm a fan of Alpine headunits myself.

As for speakers:

A lot of people here like the 4" Polk DBs, including myself.

The biggest issue with quality audio in a 93 Metro is the lack of midrange sound, due to the small speakers.

personally, i would ditch the crappy 4" speakers and do a good pair of 6.5" speakers in the doors. it would sound way better and could cost less as you would only need one set. do a simple sub and amp in the rear with a nice alpine radio. nice and simple and could for sure get for $400 or less. been doing for a while and the 4" speakers are small and have no comparison in sound reproduction like a pair of 6.5" speakers can.

Easier said than done on an 89-94. Really isn't any room for 6.5s, unless you build your own kick panels.

you can add a spacer on the door panel. sure it may not look the best but it will sound better. there are a lot of 6.5" speakers that are pretty shallow. the polk ones are good and do not need a huge amount of depth. its eaiser than one would think. it all comes down to what one can do with his own hands. in my eyes its way easier to add a spacer than deal with crappy 4" speakers. 4" speakers are great....if they are bullet tweeters.

if i can get a set of door panels from an older model i will make some fiberglass panels and sell to the forum if they would like to get rid of the small 4" speakers.

We've had people discuss doing that before, but nothing ever came of it. I can almost guarantee that you'd sell a few. I'd be your first buyer.

i will try to source some panels. from my understanding there is 2 different type of panels for those years? all i would need to know would be what speaker you wanted to run and a coaxial speaker or a component set. i guess i could ask some local members to see if they are interested as well.

89-91 had different panels than 92-94.

ill see what i can find this weekend as far as panels from the p-n-p. all interior parts are always 50% off. you have a 92 and op has a 93 so i will try to get panels from that year range first. what is the difference between them? is it just the pocket? i know most have manual windows so i would take in account for the rotation of the crank as well. coaxial or component speakers?

I'd be component.

They all are crank Windows. All that I've seen had the pocket, which I have no issue removing.

If you are going to go through all that effort you are better off making kickpanel speaker pods. Same effort and it will sound better.

personally, kick panels are always getting, well, kicked and have feet over them. low in the door at an angle will be better and will not infringe on foot placement.

Not if they are properly done. I have made and installed a ton of kickpanel speakers and if done correctly do not get kicked as much as you think. The biggest thing is you don't hear the best the speaker can do when it is installed in the door panel because you are hearing the off-axis sound the speaker produces. The more the speaker faces you (on-axis) the better it will sound.

If you have to use a spacer to install the speaker it will get kicked and hit way more than if it was installed in a kickpanel enclosure.

Just build within your budget and if you are planning to upgrade as you go make sure you plan it out.
