i have seen thousands of kickpanels in my career destroyed from feet, dented in grills, damaged speakers, broken tweeters. working as a car audio installer i see how the general public is with car audio products and have not seen nearly as many door panels damaged like i have the kickpanels. i guess its a matter of ones opinion on placement.

I'd recommend a decent head unit, but by no means do you have to break the bank with an Alpine unit. I have used them in the past and the tuning is amazing. Probably not something you'll ever use if you are just getting into car audio. You will want to update the speakers for sure, anything new will be a huge jump since they are probably worn and damaged from age alone.

I have a BOSS head unit, cheap $50 unit, in my metro and it sounds just fine. Plenty of adjustability for an entry level person. I am using very cheap speakers in there too, I believe they are Pyle 6.5" speakers. I have 4 of them which racked up $36 total. I am using a BAJA 1000W amp that I got on craigslist for $40. I combined that with a single 10" Sony Xplode woofer that I had from a previous car. Overall, I spent right at $150 for my set up and it sounds just fine. It is louder than you'll need for average listening and as far as the bass is concerned, there is no lack of it.

With that said, you can go crazy. I spent several hundred dollars on an Alpine unit. I had infinity 6.5" and 6x9s. Paired with a set of 15" 2500W woofers and a 5000W mono block amp. What good did it do? None really. It was fun for awhile. But I like my budget set up more. I get more use out of it and I don't have to worry about anyone cranking the dial and it going too loud.

My recommendation is to search around on amazon and craigslist. Amazon should have good deals on your head units (single or double DIN) and your door speakers. Then craigslist should be able to cover your amp and woofer(s). For the install kit, look to amazon or a local dealer.

I'm going through these gyrations too.

I'm thinking buy a head first.
Get some good 4 inch speakers (These look good) and
crossover the lows to a small sub mounted under the seat.
Crutchfield have some small subs with built in amplifiers
that should pretty well fit under the seat.
There are some only about 3 inches thick Like this.
I may need to raise the seat with some spacers,
but I think it would be less than an inch.

I will have to but on faith sice I don't see a way to sample before I buy.
It all looks about right and falls in the $400 range
