A quick progress report while I'm having breakfast.
Getting serious in the days before the Minnesota Meet. Even got out the blue wrench....

Could there really be only 132,636 miles on this '93?

The cam looks pristine.

Still have cross-hatching in all cylinders, even with a weird pattern in #2. (This cylinder had the best compression :hmm ) That right hand shuffle pin is stuck real good; anybody have a way to get them out without destroying them? My vice grips are lethal weapons....

This engine looks like a good candidate for rings and it definitely needs valves, so the tasks are set. "I got a long way to go and a short time to get there..." Smokey and the Bandit

Better light up a big one to celebrate....

See you at the Meet on Friday... I hope....

Are you bringing this to the Meet? :hmm Better get crackin'! :gamerz :lol

I have not been able to successfully a dowel pin, from the block, without destroying it. :smackface Napa, or Ace Hardware, should have a replacement. :hmm Or at least close. ;) I got a dowel pin from Mills Fleet Farm once and machined it to fit. :gamerz Used a drill to spin it and filed the OD to fit. :thumb

These dowels/pins are "locating pins". All that they do is "locate" the head on the block. The head bolts are what holds everything together. ^o) Transmission dowel pins are the same size. If you can't find a spare, any pin that a head bolt will pass through, of the same length & OD, will work fine. :cheers

Back in the early 70's I had a race car (D-Sports Racer) with a 750 Honda motor. It needed rebuilding and as luck would have it, I got in touch with the guy who trained all the Honda dealership mechanics in the midwest; Honda had a big training center in Milwaukee. It's a great story if you want o hear the rest of it some time. The point was that he called those hollow pins, "Shuffle Pins", and it's stuck with me ever since.

Anyhow I figured out how to get them out. Just a touch with the blue wrench and then use a thick leather pad on the jaws of my vice grips... works like a charm.

"Shuffle Pins...." abbreviated from "Anti-shuffle" pins...

Next thing we know you'll be putting "Seize Compound' on bolts.... :whistle :lol

We just finished up a long day of completing the '93 Convertible. GG, myredvert, and freegeo worked with me 'till 2:30 this morning getting it ready for the Minnesota Meet. GG got here at 2:30 on Wednesday morning, grabbed a few hours sleep and started in on the engine. We were in the assembly stage Thursday evening when myredvert, and freegeo stopped by at 6:30 on their way from Ohio and Indiana. They pitched in to install a trailer hitch and the associated wiring plus some hatch struts. I'll break the engine in on the trip to Hayfield.

A BIG THANKS to these guys for making it possible for me to bring No-Name to the Meet!!!!

After we got the motor all buttoned up in the wee small hours of the night and started it up the first time, the rpm spiked to around 2300 rpm and wanted to stay there. A diagnostic pair of vice grips applied to one of the vacuum hoses on the IAC brought the idle down to a more reasonable 1100, proving the fault lay in the IAC. A bolt plugging the hose was good enough to get me up to the MMM where I could switch in a different Intake Air Control.

Later on, after I got the old one out, I took it apart as per Snowfish's great IAC Repair Guide and was greeted with the sight of a brand new (to me) failure mode for the IAC.

The valve top section had a bunch of small particles which looked like powdered rubber and one big piece of schmutz right on the valve seat, preventing it from closing!

Posted Image

The solenoid had the same covering of particles but the spring and valve seat looked good! I'll clean it up and put it back in the convertible AFTER I replace the vacuum hoses which are likely the source of all the particles. Anybody have a list of the hose sizes I'll need?

The engine ran great on the way up to the Meet towing our new Geo camper and later up to Interstate State Park on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River. At first it acted a little tight and the water temperature was slightly elevated as the new rings got happy; but after a couple hundred miles it started to loosen up and the temp edged down slightly. I checked my fuel mileage coming back and I got ~44.7 mpg on ethanol-free gas, still towing the trailer. Probably not a super-accurate figure but it least it shows that the motor is pretty healthy. Thanks, GG!

The whole trip racked up a bit over 500 miles so after we got home I took out the dino break-in oil (Call me old school....) and changed to Mobil 1. We'll see if it uses any in the next few thousand miles!

I am so looking forward to working on this car! It is in the kind of unmolested, lightly used, rust-free shape that deserves a good freshening. With all the knowledge and talent on this forum and the FSM, I should be able to fluff & buff my way to a fun ride that will last until my rocking chair years....

Unfortunately, right now I have to set the wrenches down and concentrate on getting my shop ready for winter. Priorities really suck some times. Now if I could find a shop building forum with as much talent as the GMF, I'd have the shop done in no time! :lol

"Spring is Sprung; the Grass is Riz; I Wonder Where my Voltage Is...."

The weather here in Wisconsin has turned so nice that I wanted to wake up No-Name; and when she fired for the first time in several months, the damn alternator was locked up. I removed it for a possible refurbishment and the housing was cracked...!? WTF? I wonder if some moisture got in there this winter, froze up, and cracked it? Anyway time for plan B.

I've got what I think is a good alternator out of a donor '92 4-door and I wonder if it would be suitable. Can one of you 'Vert gurus tell me if the Japanese cars used different (Better?) units than the Canadian ones? :news
