Catalytic Converter fell off ... so what ?

To add insult to injury to the many repairs / upgrades I'm currently doing to my '91 geo prizm, my catalytic converter rusted off and I pulled the rest of it off yesterday. I have fairly limited car knowledge and took a look into this. After some research, I couldn't find a valid reason on why I should bother getting another put on.

So could someone lay out a case on why I should bother getting another one put on, other then the fact that my car is now loud as shit ?

I know nothing about those cars and how the systems may be negatively affected, if that is what you are asking.

Beyond the technical aspects, my "case" consists primarily of legal/ethical issues. Respectfully,

1. You would be driving illegally under NH law without it. It doesn't matter if you are likely to be caught or not, it is still illegal. Of course the "louder than :shit " part increases the odds of being caught. :O

2. You are knowingly and intentionally creating more harmful emissions than you should be for the car you bought.

3. You would be asking/allowing/conspiring with someone performing an official state certification function to commit fraud on your behalf in order to pass the inspection.

In addition to the above mentioned facts, i also offer the following opinion.

This is kind of like saying "government corruption is bad, except when it benefits me", and personally I would also never knowingly contribute to putting someone else's professional certification in jeopardy or encouraging this (or any other type) of fraud/corruption. And if you have or will have any, what are you hoping your children will learn from a situation like this?

To me, a repair such as this should take priority over any "upgrades" you may be doing and is simply a "necessary cost of driving a car." If you don't want to have to replace a catalytic converter, buy a car that did not come equipped with one.
I rest my "case." And good luck, whatever you decide to do. :cheers

There is always the morality police on the forums trying to convince others to follow the states' oppressive laws the people who believe in ethics and morals who may respectfully offer their differeing opinion to those who may be less grounded in such character traits that the laws of whatever state from whom you request the privilege of driving should be followed. FTFY
The OP asked forum members to "make a case," and I believe I respectfully made mine. I didn't push my values/ethics/morals on him, or judge him for whatever decision he may come to, I simply presented my opinion for his consideration because he asked. Respectfully offering my opinion does not make me the "morality police" any more than your seemingly tacit approval of unethical or illegal behavior or your disdain for those who believe acting morally and ethically is the right thing to do makes you the "immorality police," at least in my eyes. But I offered an opinion that was asked for, while yours..... well, I didn't catch your "case" for leaving it off. :hmm

Maybe you are the immorality police? :O

BTW, your response was what is known as an "ad hominem" argument...
ad hominem [ ˈad ˈhämənəm ] adverb and adjective
(of an argument or reaction) arising from or appealing to the emotions and not reason or logic.

Meaning, when you got nothing, attack the person. I'm just sayin' :dunno

And IIRC, don't you do something associated with aviation? PLEASE tell me I remembered that wrong. :(

My cat fell (rusted) off my 1995 Geo Prizm too when I had it, and we just put a straight pipe there... No inspections in WI and 95 and older don't do emissions here either. I sold it probably 15k miles later with 210k on it so I can't comment on how it effects the car, but it was running as usual when I sold it.

It seems to smell a bit worse (because I guess the fumes are exiting right under the engine, however I did read that you get better gas mileage without a cat. Going to test that.

Just my $.02...for $260 for a complete system or just a under a $100 bucks for just a cat, I would repair it properly...take care of the car and it will take care of you...again, this is just my $.02 :type

When the cat rusted off mine I scrapped it and used the money to pay for new whole new exhaust.. I used the proper pipe that came with the cat. I think it was around 135. Would I had to? No.... but now my exhaust is nice and quiet and isnt a cobbled piece of shit.

Where is a good place to scrap the cat ? I heard it has good scrap value because of the metals used.

BTW my solution was to just buy a '93 Geo Convertible . Not sure what the hell to do with my old one.
