my name is doug..
just bought a 99 metro from a friend
been a car guy forever
ive built basically any kind of hot rod, drag car, wheeling machine , you can think of , but never anything that could pass a gas station.
my friend offered me the metro cheap and i really started liking the idea of having a vehicle that gets good milage.. dont get me wrong i am still keeping the fleet of guzzlers because horsepower is me ... but i think saving money on a daily basis and keeping the speeding tickets to a minimum will be nice...
any way , the car i bought is a 99 3cyl 5 speed..
pretty decent shape, 202000 miles , runs and drives but has a dead hole and makes some transmission noise...
i was pretty excited when i opened the hood and all i could see were mechanicals and tons of space to work on it!!
i will be looking for a decent parts supplier and as much tech info as i can find... i have also heard about hyper milers and would like to do a little research on that as well..
any info or links would be appreciated..
also if anyone has a hot rod vintage car or off road project feel free to ask i may have some info or help for you as well, i have a lot of experience with early cars as well especially chrysler jeep studebaker packard and international
thanks in advance

Fastest Hampster EVER

I don't hypermile but I do like to get good gas mileage. On the interstate doing a rock solid 60 mph I have constantly achieved very high 40's on the mpg's. Since I changed work locales, I've been driving in town now and have noticed my mpg's have only been in the low 40's now.

Your mpg's will be determined on how light your right foot is. A vacuum gauge is very handy and if you can keep the needle in the mid to high teens you will be saving mpg's. Keep the needle pegged under ten and you can expect to get high 30's or low 40's.

These cars are robust if you keep oil in the engine and high rpm's off of the tranny. The engines are easy to work on. Heck, you can pull the engine out of the top side if you are strong enough. Pull the head, drop the pan, and pull the pistons and maybe you can get a re-habbed engine for a couple hundred bucks.

The tranny is probably giving up the fifth gear. Easy fix. Just pull the black hat and a few screws and you can pop the gear out. Caveman easy if you have the abilities. Under the black hat is a plate which is held down by 8 phillips head screws. One of those screws probably has worked itself out and has FUBARed your fifth gear. While the tranny is out make sure you resurface the flywheel and throw in a new pilot bearing.

Lots of folks on GMF who can assist you from afar. Just start a thread in the appropriate section and just wait for the help to arrive.

We are here to help.
