Fan comes on when car off, won't come on when car running.; Electrical bug

My new to me 97 2dr 3/5 speed has a problem with the heater/AC fan. The fan switch runs ok when the engine is off although not much air is coming through the vents when the fan is on high- could be diverter problem or something blocking duct. However when the car is running the fan won't turn on on any position but all speeds work when ignition is off. Does the blower motor use a relay or fuse when engine is on and not when off. Has anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like someone has done an unauthorized repair to the switch. God only know what has been done. :scared
Pull the radio and find out whats going on in there. Then follow the zip tie fix.

Well, I checked all fuses and read up on power flow from battery to fuses to ignition to speed selector ect... Then I pulled the connector to the heater/AC fan and it was still getting voltage there when car not running but none when engine running. I then played with the ignition switch and found that it turned back a little bit when the engine was on and if I turned it counter clockwise a couple mm's the blower would come on. I guess the ignition switch is a little wore with 240 G on the clock. So now the blower works with engine on :cheers .... Check, BUT the airflow is weak and I noticed the seals to the ducts are out so tomorrow I'm going to dig in and try to remedy all that thanks to a how to post by MetroShultz.

Totally had this same problem in my 1992 Metro 5dr. Jiggling the key counterclockwise works every time. Thanks! Simple fix

I guess the ignition switch is a little wore with 240 G on the clock.
The first time I read this sentence my mind read it as

"I guess the ignition switch is a little WHORE with 240G on the clock."

Some times my brain is a little ahead of my eyes. :lol

Try facing the page when you read, that should put your eyes and brain in the proper anatomical orientation relative to each other for the best results when reading... :thumb ;)

I wouldn't consider this a "fix" when the internal problem in the ignition switch caused by wear still exists. It's possible that one day as it continues to whore wear that other fuses that are supposed to be powered in the ON position that make the car run (like the IG fuse) may also become un-powered at the most inopportune time while driving. :O

Reminds me of a story about a mechanic who was getting frustrated trying to diagnose an intermittent engine shut down that only happened when the husband was driving the car but never happened when the wife was driving. After riding in the car with each of them individually, he finally figured out that the husbands key chain had many more keys (weight) on it and was causing wear inside the ignition switch, and the extra weight would occasionally cause the car to quit when the weight of the keys started swinging back and forth enough. A new ignition switch and convincing the husband to separate his work keys from his car keys, and the problem was truly fixed.
