18, young whippersnapper buying his first ride. Insurance is costing me more than the car itself xP
Paid 800 for it. Very few issues: namely a small Front Seal leak (will be fixing myself), bad hatchback support shocks, and an AWFUL stereo (will be upgrading as I get the moneys).

Just wanted to say hi!

Yeah, but you seem like a smart whippersnapper. ;)

Welcome to your new forum, joluthgo! :coffee

The usual seal leak is the distributor that leaks on the transmission. :-/ Hatch shocks and stereo, yep. :congrats

Save your money. Don't put a $500 stereo in an $800 car.

Why not? Had a brother who put a nice Alpine stereo system in an old ugly Gremlin (but I repeat myself!) Nobody expected such a gem in a turd like that. He could leave the keys on the dash and no one would steal it!! The car itself was stone reliable and he enjoyed the tunes, it's just that it looked so hideous it was theft-proof!

Good choice! You'll have to get familiar with the vehicle & you're probably going to spend a good amount of time at junk yards and under the hood troubleshooting & repairing things, but it will definitely be worth it when you calculate how much you're saving.

You should have good luck replacing that front seal. Be sure to unbolt the passsenger side motor mount and lower the engine enough to where you can get at the seal straight on. The seal must be carefully threaded on to the crankshaft without pressing the seal lips out. Use some grease on the spring to prevent it from popping off. Use some permatex on the outside of the seal to avoid leakage around the seal. Then you have to reinstall the timing belt. All very well covered in this forum.

Why not?
Because young people do not need to waste $500 on a car stereo. Spending as much on a stereo as you did on a car or a year of insurance is pretty damn stupid. Just trying to help him put his priorities in order...
