Possible IAT Problem?; Might have problem with IAT sensor, car idles rough and seems to catch in drive when gas is release

Hey guys. My 1993 Automatic Hatchback seems to be having some pretty bad idling issues. Starts up fine, and idles fine in park or netural, but as soon as I shift it into drive it all goes screwy, shaking like a blender on crack, until I hit the gas and accelerate a bit. Also, if I'm in 3rd gear and I take my foot off the gas to coast, the car seems to almost "catch" and slows down dramatically. I thought it might be a transmission issue at first, so I posted it under transmission threads but was advised that the not-coasting thing was probably not an issue. If that's the case, then ok. But it's both unnerving and incredibly annoying to pull up to a stoplight and have my car start shaking like crazy. Feels like the engine is gonna stall out any minute.

After digging around on this site some, I'd read that it might be an IAT sensor issue.

Can anyone give me some advice on this issue??

Thanks!

Start with a compression check to see if it's a firing imbalance. Instructions for a proper compression check are in the how to section. Report your numbers here and someone will assist further. Also check for any trouble codes.

Thanks I'll look into that. Also, my friend (who's very experienced in all things relating to car mechanics) seems to think that the issue is a shifter solenoid in the transmission. Thoughts??

Shift manually from 1st to 2nd and then to D, If it shifts correctly the solenoids should be fine by my understanding. You can also jumper them and listen for the click. Your best friend for most troubleshooting is going to be the FSM in the manual section under 94 Library, should be nearly identical to yours as long as you stay out of the advanced emissions sections. It takes a little to figure out how it's laid out but it is the best resource for exact instructions for troubleshooting.

in my experience when an autotragic metro starts bucking like crazy in gear and at idle it has been a combination of things.

engine/ power unit mounts were clapped out, there was an exhaust valve shaped like a D, and the idle was too low. i have found driveability issues caused by the throttle position sensor being out of adjustment (usually caused by some nitwit cranking on the throttle bell crank stop screw, thinking that was how you adjusted the idle.)

have a buddy sit in the car with it in drive and his foot on the brake while you check under the hood. i'd bet a dollar to a donut that you will see the engine/ power unit rocking like crazy. the factory even added more torque control to the automatics' mounting arrangement because they are prone to bucking.

Hmm. Great ideas you guys, thanks! Definitely gonna try that IAC rebuild after I replace the alternator (just found out that was bad. It might be what's causing the bad idle [low battery not fully firing sparks maybe?] cuz the engine runs fine when you get it spinning at higher rpm). I'll also check up on those power unit mounts. Car has some rust damage in spots, so who knows what I'll find on those mounts.
