Well, take it from somone who has had old style and new style metros, and delivered pizzas for four major chains.

Buy an automatic four door, 2000 or so.
Oh god, why?? Why an automatic? I'd hate myself...

I put 27k miles on a 3 door 5 speed in south florida in the last 12 months, not even delivering pizzas...

Think real hard about a four door....
I'm definitely gonna get the 5-door, but I don't think I'll go for an automatic. It's less fun and more costly. Plus I despise sedans...

Hey, it's your call. The clutch replacement is tons of fun...

:evillol
I hope so! I'll probably be burning out the stock clutch as quickly as I possibly can, so that I can come in here asking for aftermarket clutch recommendations :P I'm tempted to put a truck clutch in it, but I'm guessing I won't be able to fit one... hopefully I can find something good.

Welcome, Yeah you are in a salt and rust state. Closely inspect the support areas on the body right behind the wheels for the A arm and bolt downs. Also, where the drive shafts come through the body modelings. This is where you will see the rust. Do a search on here for the repair proceedure... if it is clean great if not some one will hopefully post the link for you. Time and some welding skill to fix. Also look at the rear wheel wells and under the door jams for really bad or just starting rust. I have a number of geos and my daily driver has over 250K miles on it. A Geo in your area can look great on the outside but in the areas mentioned can be very bad, I would much rather do engine repair than body repair.

In my area you can get a geo for $600 to $800 that runs but has problems body and or engine problems. You get up around $1200 to $1800 and the body is in much better shape but somtimes the engine or trans has problems. Like was said the more you can afford up front the less problems you will have--- if you are careful. You may have seen their are posts or a sticky on what to look for in a geo before you buy. Window regulars are a pain... check em out for proper operation and/or offer the seller less due the problems... again you can fix but it takes time.

In my area seems 5 doors are harder to find and they almost always come with automatics.

And the 1.3 clutch is likely heavy enough, they wear very little normally.
The question for me isn't just how heavy a clutch is, but moreso how nicely it interacts with the pedal, if that makes sense. I want the sweet spots to be easy to feel and have everything nice and smooth. Maybe I'll see how a 1.3 clutch treats me :hmm

I have some geos with stiff clutches and some with very light.... easy to adjust the grab point close to the floor or farther up.

:+1

It's a basic cable clutch. Not much to it.
Ah, cool. I should have expected, everything in the Metro is super simple. This should be fun :thumb

1.3 clutch is bigger so it grips better, I can't speak to clutch feel as I haven't driven with one but the flywheel and clutchset has to be replaced. I purchased a Spec stage 1 clutch set some years ago and the spring issue went away and the pedal pressure is about the same as the throttle pedal. It is possible the Spec has changed in the years since I bought it, but that is my experience with the one I have.
