Changed the gear box fluids in the kick; WTF, fluid draining from the fill plugs?

So, my sidekick ljx was under serviced, sat a lot, had like 66 thousand original miles on it. I serviced it when I got it and it showed lack of maintenance. I used walmart fluids cause I was working part time after being out of work for 6 months from my fathers death.

Found last summer the antifreeze was crap and the whole system was full of rust. Changed it out to some peak antifreeze. Didnt drive the kick that much the whole year.

Decided since I like the handling from some recent suspension mods and cheap gas to put a few thousand miles on it and change out the gear boxes to mobile 1 synthetic fluid. All the gear boxes had fluid draining from the fiil plugs. :hmm I read somewhere to crack the fill plugs first before the drain plugs so you have a way to add fluid back in once you drain it. :cheers Guessing some water was in the mix to add to the fluid to make it pour from the full plugs?

The rear diff was a dark color, some lumps and bubbles. Magnet was full of crap.

Transfer case was a honey color, magnet was dirty and some coffee grounds like came out before the dribbling started.

The tranny was like a layered cake. First it was muddy, they cloudy, then golden honey. Magnet was full of crap.

The front diff was golden brown, then before the dribbling this coffee grounds like came out at the end. Magnet was also dirty.

Wonder how the performance will change? I managed to do this without spilling any and had 2 qts left over. :cheers

Found advance auto has some generic ones.

Finding the tranny shifts better with mobile 1 vs synchromesh. It doesnt grind going into reverse with clutch pushed in all the way. :cheers

That was something I'll never get over from changing out all the fluids like that in my Tracker every couple of years or so - it took a buttload of fluid compared to the Metro! :O

My transmission and gearbox always showed some signs of having had some moisture in them. I asked a mechanic at the dealer where I bought about that and he said it gets in from a vent hole in the top. I never could see it, but I always saw very small signs of "leaking" coming from that area.

Yeah, I cant help but feel there is a better way to buy the fluid than ordering 8 of those qt size bottles with the nipple on top. I think the diffs only require one change at 60k miles, the transfer case and tranny are based on usage. The tranny should be changed the most frequent and between 7-15 thousand miles. It was under serviced then I used walmart gear oil and Ive since found the other places I used their fluids have deteriorated, so as to why I am doing it again. :banghead

The water in the tranny is an interesting one. The diffs have vent hoses and the top of them are wet with what looks like a slow leak. I cant see one for the tranny, but water is getting into it. :scared

As a side note I had shifting issues with the 1981 mercedes 240d I had and I couldnt get my fat ass up under it to change the tranny fluid. A friend did it for 25 bucks as I had the fluid already. He said there was more water in it than oil. :rofl

I see you are suppose to use 30w oil in the autolockers. I had slammed it full of wheel bearing grease. No wonder it either wont lock or wont release. Right now I got one locked going forward and one locked going in reverse. Talk about a fustercluck. :banghead I need to secure both axles and rotate one wheel at a time to unlock it or just install the manual lockers. :cheers
