No one turns drums any more?; squealing rear brakes, but plenty of material

I get like a squeal or rail car noise from the rear of my sidekick under heavy braking. I checked and everything looks fine. I thought I could take the drums to my choice of auto store to get them turned, but no one does that. I was told to buy new drums as its too expensive to get them shaved. :smackface

Is this the norm?

Looks like drums do not come with studs. Thats 10 studs, 4 bucks a piece too.

Looks like the drums are different from the 2 and 4 door model and 95 vs 96 and later. :die

Man, going to need to do some calling in the morning. :popcorn

Pep Boys does, so does O'reilly.

I just had 4 turned from the horse trailer at Pep Boys. I think it was $14.99/each. They were not used to trailer drums but did a great job other than not being able to do the magnet surface.

Then there's the tire/brake shops - they'll do it for you too if you bring them in.

Took some rotors to the shop that does my state inspections last month. Owner laughed at me, even tho he has all the equipment. Said he hadn't even turned any of it on in a couple of years. Said it's too cheap to buy new ones & takes too long to turn the old ones. Said he makes more per hr steady working on cars instead of somebody babysitting the brake lathe. Kinda like finding a radiator repair shop these days. Ain't none. Not around here anyways.

Thanks, Oreilys is new to this area. Think this is one store somewhat near me. Id rather have them do that and slap some new premium shoes on the rear.

Yup, the stores "near" me turn drums. :rocker

Thanks guys. I had checked napa, advance auto, auto zone, midas, and a 4wd off road shop near me.

Just saw some Beck Arnley premium wholesale closeout drums on Rock auto for $10-12 or so each (depending on year) before shipping. Might be worth checking out?

Reputable shops still do it. True there's more money in selling new but IMO it's a disservice for the customer to not at least offer it.

My boss doesn't turn them (im actually going to try to buy the lathe) even though I've diagnosed 3 vehicles in the past 6 months with new drums or rotors that were repaired by sending the new parts to be machined (noise, vibration, etc. New doesn't always mean good)

Good bye

We stock rotors for all the different types of pickup and SUVs that we own at work. At least we only have Fords now but we have Escapes, Rangers and F series pickups. But we have 3 different series of F-150s and coil and leaf spring super duties from 250-550s. I have the rotors turned if they haven't been burned up, I also stock new so I can repair any truck when needed. We stock calipers for the 550s and the 03-09 f150s, we have 25 550s, 19 of them are 37' bucket trucks. Napa and two of the big tire stores in town turn rotors, Carquest also has a complete machine shop, they do a great job flattening out exhaust manifolds.

Thanks, checked rock auto. Seems those deals are 1 only and for the 2 door. I have the 5 door wagon with 16 v engine, 4wd and 5 speed. Those run about 60 bucks each, then I need wheel studs.

Yeah, we use to turn drums and rotors and that would make them true again as they warp over time. Basically we set the machine and it automatically cut off. We also had a machine to break the glaze off the pads and shoes.

They had a hell of a selection of brake shoes on rock auto. I think Ill just buy them at oreliys with the drum turning.

Does anyone 'arc the brake shoes' anymore?
Seems no one even mentions that process.
