Learned how to do that in High School. Never seen it done again. The shoes are made with a compromise for the size. |

We use to trim the leading edge so the brakes would less likely lock up when applied. It wasnt long after that, that most cars that needed brakes were disks and rotors. The drums seldom needed replacing other than brake seals, adjustment and wheel bearings. |

They still turn drums but the economics is all in favor of new ones. Even a drum turned within specs is not as good as a new one. You are right about the costs of new studs. That's why you should reuse the old ones.

I visited quite a few auto stores and even looked on ebay. NAPA has a store in a high crime area that turns brake parts. They can only get the shoes from Highpoint, NC. Advance Auto cant help me. Auto zone has the shoes, but no hardware ever for the 10 inch drums. I decided at this point to just go to rockauto and get all parts by the same company, raybestos. So got 2 new drums for the 4 door model, shoes, springs and wheel studs. The 4 door uses 10 inch drums, the 2 doors 8 inch. Makes me want to reconsider a rear disk brake conversion kit.
