I have a 91 Geo Prizm i bout off a guy for 700 dollars. It didn't have problems when i bought the car. I have replaced the thermostat, heater to valve hose, another hose, and the pcv valve due to breakage. After working on my car the other day it now has a high idle and reads very hot. White smoke comes out the back and it is drinking my antifreeze like crazy without it coming out. I dont spot any leaks and i have replaced the hoses that blew. what can cause this to happen? . This is the make model and specs 91 Chevy Geo Prizm LSI 1.6 liter 4 cylinder 16 valve Vin 6 engine Edited by BlueLeppi, Dec 1 2014, 04:17 PM.

Check your oil to see if its clean. It should be slightly clear or black not sandy brown. If it is sandy brown it sounds like you could have a head gasket issue. |

the oil does need changed its black but has sluge in it. would that mean my head gasket needs replaced. I didnt have the idle or white smoke problem till after the pcv valve was replaced. Edited by BlueLeppi, Dec 1 2014, 04:29 PM.

For test purposes, disconnect the PCV valve and plug up the hose going to the intake (like by putting a bolt in it). See if that gets rid of the high idle. I suppose if the PCV valve is defective (or wrong part number) it could act like a vacuum leak and jack up the idle. |

pull the spark plugs. if you see one that looks like it has been steam cleaned the head gasket leak will be to that cylinder.

First thing you should do is find a Toyota Corolla website. Your Prizm has nothing in common with a Metro, it's 99% Toyota and our cars are 99% Suzuki. It sounds as if you have bad head gasket or cracked head. |

Not "pretty much the same". It is a Toyota Corolla, just like our cars are Suzuki Swifts.

To put it simply, that white, sugar-smelling smoke coming out of the tailpipe is your antifreeze. What happened is the head gasket blew between the cylinder and the water jacket and the combustion pressure in the cooling system blew up your hoses. Your best bet is to find a used engine for it, if the body and interior make it worth the money. If the body and interior are shot, part it out or scrap it. The decision might come down to how good the tires are. A new set of tires is worth almost half what you paid for it. |
