92-94 rear speakers - what fits where and looks good?

I had 2 6x9's in a speaker box connected with a speakon connector so I could take the box out to haul stuff. Find I haul stuff all the time so the speaker box is never in the car. Also going back and forth to the ranch, things get pretty dusty and dirty back there where the box was.

Looking to put some rear speakers in but want something that doesn't look hacked and doesn't eat into the cargo carrying capability.

What fits and where do you mount them in the back? It looks like some speakers could fit in the plastic section of the rear hatch facing forward.

four inch two-ways. wiring should be there. factory ones had a color-matching square grille. maybe hit up a Canadian for those speaker grills, the round grills that come with some of the new speakers are to big to fit nicely.

there is just enough room to cut in 4x6 speakers into the plastic panel on each side of the rear seat just above where your elbow would be if you were sitting in there.

jeff, with the exception of the dreadful motorola 2x10" speakers, 4x6" speakers are possibly the most horrid speaker you can consider.

the mechanical effects of an oval cone surround on an oval cone caused by diffraction from a buckling of the cone's material produces so much distortion when driven in a high excursion mode (played with any power at even a moderate volume level.)

controlling an oval cone suspended by a round spider at the top of the voice coil and an oval surround causes the oval cone to flex in the long direction. that flex creates the distortion you hear.

i pioneered a laser back scatter technique for identifying the mechanically induced non-linear distortion caused by cone breakup back in 1983 which became one of the most common development tools for loudspeaker development used by all the big hitters in the audio scene.

ideally, you want the cone to move in a truly pistonic motion which is why most (and the best) speakers are round. with a round voice coil suspended in a round spider pushing a round cone stabilized by a round surround a round speaker will have the least mechanical weakness and resultant diffraction.

that is the general rule for typical loudspeakers but there are a few departures. magnapan developed an electrostatically controlled planar speaker that looked like a room divider. there have been others, too. there are ribbon tweeters and piezo drivers. horn type drivers were big when klipsch built big folded horn speakers. one of my favorites of the wierd speakers are the ones that use a tank of special gas forced through an aperature and a carbon arc to make an arc plasma generate a pressure wave. lately i have been highly amused by the guys who use a stereo pair of tesla coils to generate an electrical discharge to develop the sound pressure wave. ;)

none of that is suitably durable for car stereo so it's best to stay with the 1950s technology using improved materials in a round speaker. my 2 cents.

In my Helpful Stereo Links thread (link in signature) there is a place to buy a kit that lets you install 6.5" speakers in a 92-94. No cutting required. :thumb

yeah, 4x6 speakers are not preferred, that just happened to be what I had on hand from a previous car. The placement referred to is great though, its pointing almost right at your ear when you are sitting up front. Poor people have poor ways you know =)
