ps: yes. this car or another -- if we're going to be sharing it, and i'm fixing it, then we're definitely going to be having a tutorial in car care, checking fluids, basic noise interpretation, and basically "STOP if it's possibly a bit strange!!".
As you know for yourself, nobody is born with this knowledge. You have to be trained. This goes for guys and gals, both, but at least the ladies are more prone to admit their limitations.

Let the training begin!!

Personal opinion on the oil pump, it was starved for oil as well and likely worn. Replace it and have peace of mind. When the light comes on, it's already too late.

I think you better look at this photo a little closer!! :shake :shake
If you installed the pan and didn't notice your oil pick up tube was loose, you are going to be in for another big surprise!! :die

great eye, dc guy! yes, i did know, and tightened it before it went on. loosening the pickup is the only way i can tell to get the pan on/off w/o dropping the exhaust, which is stuck. the weird finagle is one of the reasons the oil pan leaked the first time, maybe the second. :(

mmm, i think you're probly right. i think i'll get the pump. are there any how-to's on pulling/installing the pump? i couldn't find ... maybe we'll make one?

perfesser: i do indeed know well how ignorant of cars we are born -- and, many of us, grow into "adulthood"!

thanks again folks.

I'm truly saddened to see such a tragic end. :( Metros are a wonderful car, but it may be time to cut your loses. ^o) More dollars, in the triple digits, will need to be spent. :deal I perused the Portland Craig's list :news , and there's a bunch of really nice Toyotas, and some Saturns, in the $2000 - $6000 price range. :thumb Worth a thought. Either way, dollars will spent. :deal Smart money will be on something that needs oil changes. And maybe brakes and tire eventually. :thumb I don't think we should dig into engines anymore. :cheers

I can't take credit for seeing that bolt loose, as I had a little birdie contact me to let me know. B-) B-)

For humor's sake, what kind of bird was it? (I'm looking for a real bird that fits the informant somehow) We have a consultant that works here that is either a humming bird or a flamingo of some sort.

That would be an eagle, he soars over our heads, and can see things from a mile away.
He then likes to swoop down and pick off the weaker prey by putting them out of their misery.
He even likes to pick at the carcass for a few days. :evillol :evillol

This guy has an interesting mind. He can carry on a conversation while watching BJ play on fast forward and keep the count and what the proper play is. He isn't allowed to play in any major US casinos and is known on sight in most.

long overdue update: my friend who wanted to replace the bearings, also did the oil pump, but broke a bolt in the head and had to have it remachined! i got it all together again... but it clanked like mad on starting ... something left in the head i guess. finally under pressure from housemates had it towed... ;)

my takeaways: learned a ton, feel i did a reasonable job pulling tearing down, but need to coddle it longer after to make sure no little oil leaks turn into much much worse.

after a year or so working only on my escort, i'm back looking at a geo. see new thread.
