My 93 3/5 was surging at idle about 4-8 times before settling down. I disconnected my IAC after a bunch of reading on here and it immediately fixed the surging. Finally got around to removing IAC to do the fix posted on here and found that my spring looks perfect. It had oil under the plunger and was slightly grimey so I cleaned it up and reinstalled. Just drove today and it still did some surging. I'll try it a little longer but what next? Attempting to attach a few pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

That IAC looks great. And appears to be doing it's job. Which could be trying to compensate for small vacuum leaks. Simple fix would be to trim off 1/8" off each vacuum hose. The ends get cracked, and/or take a set, and don't seal 100%. Replacing them is not a bad idea, but trimming them works really well too. And it's free.

I agree with Snowfish, but while the spring is intact, it may be starting to lose its "spring." I have no idea if you can try to push it out a bit to get a hair more travel in it without damaging it - I have never seen a whole spring in an IAC before. ![]() If you do a functional check of your idle up circuit, you can at least get a good idea if the idle up and circuit and IAC solenoid is trying to work correctly. With the engine in whatever condition you have the least amount of surging (warm or cold?) turn the headlights or blower fan ON and monitor what the idle does. Also good call on trimming the ends of or replacing all the vacuum lines. Use your underhood sticker to verify all lines are routed correctly. Often a small crack can go unnoticed, and there are a few places where lines can easily get incorrectly mis-routed if they had been pulled. |

we need some clarification on something: when does this 4-8 idle surges happen........... right after starting engine or shortly after? when engine reaches operating temp? when you come to a complete stop after rolling / or coasting in nuetral? |

Both of my '92 g10s had fast idling and both springs looked great just like in your pictures. Apparently they do lose their tension even if they aren't broken, so the ball point pen trick worked great. |

Never does it at start up. And once it idles back down after surging it won't do it again until I give it some gas. Then it goes back into its surge loop until it calms back down. It's not a terrible surge like 2000 rpm by it's annoying. Does it after warming up some. And it will do it when I coast with clutch in or coming to a stop. |
