And considering I loose the Mighty Mouse gauges if I keep it, it might end up for sale when all is said and done. |

![]() Is the ECM needed to translate the speed?? from the sensor? Edited by pvr007, Feb 9 2015, 02:08 AM.

The Esteem version looks like it will work with our transmission. If you follow the circuits on the diagram the VSS sends a signal to the cluster as well as the ECU. It will take some experimenting to determine what the cluster is reading from the VSS and will operate without the ECU. After that is determined then I can try to figure out what it's going to take to make it work in the Metro. If lucky, the speedometer will work from just the VSS and everything else can be swapped from the Metro cluster. |

Oh I like this, I like it a lot ![]() Having a gear driven speed sensor that may work with the geo gear drive from the transmission would be a big step. Maybe a signal box could be built to emulate the signals needed for the gauge cluster. |

This works out there could be a rush of Forenza gauge clusters being sold. LOL I'm already interested in this upgrade. |

I looked at the diagram again, and again, before I decided to take a chance and order the cluster (which was cheaper than I could get it at the local PnP). The VSS signal is sent to the cluster and the ECU. The fuel, temperature, and tach signals all go to the ECU before being sent to the clusters computer. This implies that the cluster is using the VSS for the speedometer input. If we're lucky, that is the same signal as the one generated by the cluster in the Metro that gets sent to the ECU so there are no issues with the lack of a correct VSS signal for the Metro ECU. The next bit of luck will be if the signals for the tach, temperature, and fuel are the same as the Metro uses and it is simply passed through the Forenza ECU, as opposed to the ECU doing something with the signal or the signal being different to start with. In the end, if the speedometer will work correctly off of the Esteem VSS and the ECU works properly with that same signal, the Metro parts should be able to be crammed in the Forenza housing. If everything actually works with the Metro inputs I have to hope that the method to change the 4 cylinder tach is very similar to the method used to adapt the 4 cylinder Metro version. |

Wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to just get hack the metro cluster? Re-arrange the location of the gauges and instruments and get some custom artwork for the speedo and tach faces? |

Personally I really like the Forenza gauges, its more than just the gauge faces. If this works without major modifications or wiring it will be a great success and you will probably see several people do it. To replicate that with the Geo gauges it may be just as difficult to get the nice clean modern look. |

I already have custom gauges.![]() ![]() It would be hard to duplicate the look of a factory cluster without paying hundreds of dollars to an aftermarket gauge manufacturer and then the fact that very few people customize these cars means that the necessary research hasn't been done to make them compatible. |

Im going to pick n pull tomorrow. If there is a forenza there ill pull it out and see both side by side and see if the forenza fits in the metros. |

I'm very sure on it fitting. No reason to make one the same shape but slightly different, cheaper tooling to keep it the same. If you can snag a set of the plugs and some of the loom from one that would help the process. And an Esteem VSS would be helpful as well, everything will be on hold until a reasonably priced one can be obtained. Not real common in our JYs here so Melanie may not be able to get one for a bit. Make this a request for parts. I need the connectors and some loom from a Forenza cluster (preferably free plus shipping) and an Esteem VSS and the plug and loom from that (I'll pay JY rate plus shipping). Anyone doing JY runs beyond this, look for Esteems, the VSS is $150 retail and on Ebay. When I have all the parts I will post everything I do to try to get it to work. |
