So i am a new owner of a 95 geo metro that doesn't have antilock brakes as far as i know. while driving like i normally do...i was stopping at a stop light and i didn't push on the brakes suddenly or too hard but i did push them a little further then normal. im not sure if the brakes were bad to begin with or what hence having to apply more pressure to make the vehicle stop, so anyway the car then didn't move when i released the brake i knew this was strange but because i was in traffic i started to accelerate and SQUEALLLL so i turned on the flashes and pulled over asap but as i was doing that i heard a loud bang/pop like the brake was stuck and it released. After that the car drove fine except now i notice the start of the grinding sound when brakes are going bad and its really bad when i am braking..later i noticed the hub cap on the rim was cracked, i dont think it was like that before.. so what did i do? What do i need to replace? Also is this going to be dangerous to drive the car? I work full time and drive a good distance, don't want to cause an accident...

Good bye

Quit driving the car until you can have the brakes repaired! If you don't know how to work on brakes have it towed somewhere that does. Who worked on your previous cars? Call them.

Frame Fixer

it is very common that the rear brake shoe material: separates from the metal shoe part and can jam or stick in the rear drums I have also had front brake pad material separate from the metal backing I suggest you pull all four wheels and see what's going on

I doubt the hubcaps has anything to do with it. You just happened to see it cracked. Coincidence.

You may be losing brake fluid. If you're pushing in the brakes constantly to create pressure, then you've got a leak.
If it got stuck, likely the brake wheel cylinders have failed and are not returning to where it should be. Same result: it's a leak.

Considering this is your rear brakes, your only way of stopping safely is with your emergency brakes and with a leak, that makes it even harder. I've driven with emergency brakes and let me tell you, it's not fun. If you are unable to pull apart your brakes, you may want to get someone to do it for you. For now, you will want to find another vehicle to use.

Same thing JUST happened to me last week. I pulled the rear wheels/drums and installed new rebuilt wheel cylinders...I didn't even need shoes. Cylinders can be removed and replaced without removing anything else. EASY FIX.
