Not sure of speaker size

So I don't know much about the car audio world, but I want to change out a set of speakers in the rear. I'm pretty sure they were custom put in my '93 Metro Convertible because when I was looking at speakers at Best Buy the guys were telling me the rears were 4" x 6" and it seems pretty clear these are circular. I was told to measure diagonally, and I'm coming up with 8". But I wanted to confirm that the way to measure them is from end of unit to end of unit diagonally ?

Also, what do I need to know about speaker watts ? I see 200W, 250W, 300W, etc. and not sure how to know why I should buy whatever wattage. Thanks.

You're not supposed to measure the grill cover, you're supposed to measure the speaker.
Take the cover off...

Where are those speakers located?

4"x6" speakers were installed in the rear shelf location on Hatchbacks. No such thing on a Convertible.

Hey you have the speakers I do! People argued with me about the size/location, but I'm letting you know right now 6.5 will be good.

Oh cool thanks a lot, so they are 6.5" diameter ?

Is it easy to buy a new pair of speakers and swap them in or is it more involved like the head units ?

My girlfriend did them in about 20 minutes. I could honestly do it in 5 or something. It's really simple. Get the adapters and it'll make it easier.

As far as speakers go, on the stock head unit you want really efficient speakers. High 'db' ratings, watts are pretty much meaningless.

I'm looking at these, how should I know if they have a good decibal rating or what kind of adaptors I need ?

89db is what my speakers are rated at, and they do not play very loud.

These are good speakers. However, I have not used them in a Metro before. Most of your sound should be coming from the dinky 4" speakers up front... so you may want to look into really good ones for that location... but then you run into the problem of those speakers aiming at your thighs... The whole speaker upgrade thing gets annoying/expensive really fast.

Just buy cheap ones if that's the case.

Turbo3 and Twincam Tweaker

coche, i told you in that thread that those rear speakers in your car were not factory. those were aftermarket and probably installed by a dealer.

the location your speakers are mounted is an engineered access hole meant to let you get to the door pin switch connectors.

they are nicely executed aftermarket speakers but they are not oem. ^o)

oem rear speaker mounting in a vert is in the rear cowl, 4" speakers. the grilles are molded into the plastic trim for the rear cowl between the b pillars.

Coche Blanco is dealing out good advice here. Those Infinity speakers he linked to with the 93 db sensitivity will play louder off the same wattage than the 89 db Pioneers you're looking at. Amazon has the shallow mount version of the Infinity for $51 a pair.
