Stereo Upgrade, no power to unit

I have 91 XFI and am replacing the factory radio with a run of the mill Pioneer. I connected all the wires per the instructions in the wire harness and new unit, but I'm not getting any power. The old radio only gave static so I know the connections were at least good. The first time I put it all together I used the ground that was used for the old unit. But I didn't get power and I couldn't trace the ground so I ran a new ground from the new receiver to the screw behind the ashtray (not a lot of options from what I could see).

I followed the wiring instructions exactly, the colors matched with the functions, etc etc. I have no idea how to diagnose this problem. Can anyone with more experience provide some insight?

Did you cut the factory harness or use an adapter?

Crutchfield sent me a harness to connect to the wires from the dash and then I crimped the wires from the new harness to the wires from the receiver. Sorry if I'm not making sense, this is all new to me and I might not be understanding your question correctly.

Adapter is always the best way to go. I just wired up one yesterday that some idiot cut the old harness out when they removed the radio & only left me 2 inches of wire sticking out of the wire loom. :banghead
Just looking at the wires & guessing. I would have thought just connect red to red, white to white, etc. But no.... Using the FSM, I found battery was white with a black tracer, red was a speaker wire & so on. Would have never figured that out without the FSM. Double check each pin against the FSM wiring chart & use your 12v test light to find the constant battery wire & switched power wire.

You used a harness, good. :thumb

Make sure like Car Nut says you have 12v on the yellow wire, and 12v on the red wire (when the ignition switch is on) using the new ground wire you made. If not try a new ground first, then we'll chase fuses.

IIRC
SOME pioneer units ground through the antenna, and if all you got was static on your old one, your antenna wire might be broken, just a thought. Try the other things first. ^o)

I sincerely appreciate the help, it's what makes this site my go-to when I am doing anything on my metro! :cheers

A quick question about the wiring. The new Metra harness connected into the dash connector and then I crimped the wires from the new harness to the wires from the receiver. So if each wire's function on the new harness matches the wire's function on the receiver, how could I mess something up with the wires coming out of the dash (since those wires become the connector)?? :banghead The only wire not going to the connector is the ground, which is going straight to it's ground point.

I'll post pictures in a minute, I feel like I'm doing a horrible job explaining everything and don't want to waste everyone's time...

Your doing fine. :thumb
My spidey senses are telling me it's a ground problem. Or a blown fuse.

Okay, as I was taking the pictures I realized that the cut wires might not have been done at the factory after all. I always assume that if I'm missing something (like rear speakers) it's because the xfi didn't come with them.
The white connector is obviously the new one and all the wire colors & functions match with the wire colors and functions of the receiver:

Here are the diagrams I've been using for the wires (first is the hookup for the receiver, then the harness connecting to the dash).

And finally, the whole kit and caboodle as one giant mess:

I hate when they do that!

Give me a minute while I scrounge a diagram up for you...

Ok, here it is:

Picture of the connector and a table including the wire color as per the factory, as per the adapter, and a description of what it does.

That should help you sort your problem out, and if you feel this is beyond the scope of your abilities...
I'm about 2 hours south of you.
Have soldering iron, will travel. :coffee

But if you think you can fix it... let us know what else you need! We're here to help. ^o)

See what I was talking about? Red from the factory wiring isn't hot. White with black tracer is switched hot & yellow is constant battery power.
Also, a good way to quickly test your speakers. Determine which wires are for your speakers & rig up a 9v battery with test leads. Small alligator clips work great. Hook up the pos side battery to pos side speaker wire, then just touch the neg batt lead to the neg wire of speaker. If the voice coil isn't fried, you'll clearly hear the speaker making noise. I don't suggest using 12v battery power as if might be a little much.

White is constant battery power in the factory harness. It plugs into yellow in the standardized aftermarket adapter.

Wow, this is fantastic! I'm going to give it a whirl and if it still won't work then I'll take you up on the offer, although I would probably travel down to you so I can see more of our wonderful state. I just moved here and my wife and I love seeing what's around!
