96 metro multiple electric failures

after installing a stereo in my 96 I noticed I have no parking lights in front and back, no taillights, no license plate lights, no dash lights, and the dome light doesn't work. following the FSM for no parking lights (front and back) and no taillights and no license plate lights-I find I have power at the taillight fuse on the fusebox but no power at the light 1 relay-the FSM says no power at relay is either a broken white wire or bad fusebox-I am going to see if I have power on top on the fusebox where the plug is that goes to the relay box-I am leaning towards a bad relay box because the dome light doesn't work and it has a white wire from the fusebox to the light-I can't see where I would have 2 white wire breaks on different areas of the car at the same time-and this doesn't even consider the no dash lights-thoughts?

Did you cut any wires putting in the stereo or use an adapter?

Logic suggests that if it was working immediately before your new stereo went in that something went wrong during said install and messed things up. You have power on both sides of the fuse? Check for power/continuity on the steering column for both the ignition switch and the light switch? Maybe you damaged a ground wire behind the stereo or somewhere near...

Basic idea is to trace from one end of the circuit to the other until you find the problem...

No, I didn't have to cut any wires, my car has a female plug which goes towards the steering colum and the stereo wires connect to a male plug that I plug into it. when I first hooked up the wires the stereo didn't work and I found that the red wire was hot at all times while the yellow wire was cold both with key off and on. my understanding is the yellow wire should be hot at all times and the red wire hot when the key is on. I should add that the stereo is used and I bought it as an after thought from the same ebay seller I bought a new one from (put the new one away for later-for some dumb reason I wanted to use this one because it has a marine weather channel) I hooked up the stereo yellow wire to the red car wire because it was hot at all times-I ran a wire from the stereo red wire to the wiper fuse on the fuse box (wipers still work fine) the stereo does power up and work fine-I do think I remember the buzzer and dome light acting intermitent while I was handling the female plug at first-oh well I'll play around with it as this is just my back-up car-thank for the help.

Red it hot at all times and yellow isn't? Oh dear. You might need a bible, a cross and some holy water for this one.

The first thing you need to do is get the wires to do what it is they are suppose to do. Never, NEVER, just "accept" what you find when it comes to wiring. Stop and fix it right, or bad things happen. :bananaburn

Many of your issues are caused by the fact that you just accepted what you found and hooked it up anyway. You need an multimeter and alot of study time with the diagrams in your FSM. Fix whats you know is broken first, then move on to tunes. ^o)

The dome light issue is a separate issue from the parking light issue. While they may be related, fix one issue at a time. ^o)

For now this diagram from Mythstae should help you out alot:

A good car audio shop will have the pigtail that will plug into your harness, just wire the stereo plug to that and you wouldn't need an extra fuse box.. There like $15-$20, and well worth it, just plug and play..
