OK, I would like to pick all of you mechanic's brains, here. I have a 1991 Geo Metro LSi, it started falling apart 2 days after I purchased it from my neighbor. First, it overheated, so I bought the good king of stop leak, fixed that, then had to change out the thermostat, the upper radiator hose had some pin holes in it, which I fixed with super glue and duct tape, until I can afford to completely replace them (I am a disabled, single mother with 2 small children, waiting on Social Security- even though I was approved 6 months ago, and kid's fathers aren't paying their child support. Thank God for good friends helping me through this difficult time or I would still be in the domestic abuse shelter!!) I live in Oklahoma, and the weather can't decide if it wants to be spring or fall. We got ice then snow on top of it and I tried to go to the store, but apparently the battery had zero cold crank amps, and the car wouldn't start. I loaded up my tools into my car and had it, and me, towed to AutoZone, tested the battery and it was dead. I bought a new battery, connected everything, and my car will crank, but won't start. A guy from the store used his ohmmeter to see if there was any power going to the distributor and there was none. One thing I noticed when being towed, was that even with the key in the ignition and in the auxiliary position, the gear shift wouldn't budge out of park. I later found something to pull to manually move the gear shift, which, I guess the tow guy completely missed, because he DRUG my car onto the flat bed and then bounced it off. It irked me quite a bit! The car came with a Chilton's manual for Prisms or Novas. I don't know how similar they are considering those are 4 cylinder cars and mine is a 3 banger. I am thinking the problem may be the neutral safety switch, and my father will order one for me, but I want to make sure before he goes and spends any of his money, especially since electrical parts are not returnable. I seriously need advise and I can not afford to take it to a shop. I'm the grease monkey, here, lol! Please email me asap at mdaek82@gmail.com or facebook at mdaek82@yahoo.com , thank you to all who reply!!

The neutral safety switch will prevent the starter from cranking the engine over at all if it is not in park or neutral. It will not stop it from firing up if the starter will turn the engine over. Save yourself some money and time and don't buy a new one. Key probably needs to be in the "on" position to pull on the cable that releases the shift lever, not just "aux". Unless it's cable-less (doubtful), in which case it still need to be in the "on" position to fire the solenoid that releases the shift lever. Just noticed the bit about emailing...well, that's no fun.
