I'm sure this will be easy to answer, but I haven't a clue what it's for.

Anyway, this relay looking box is wired to the gas and brake pedals and secured with electrical tape but isn't wired to anything else. What was it intended for?

Yep, just not when the engine was on. ^o)

This looks VERY similar to a very old ignition relay security "system" I bought at a yard sale for a quarter a couple of years ago.

Basically, it is just a relay that you have to "activate" in a hidden way, with a hidden switch, in order to crank your car. This guy looks like he attached it to the accelerator pedal.

In other words at some point, you had to turn your Metro on, press the accelerator pedal to the floor for a moment and THEN you could crank it. I *guess* it might slow a car thief down? :dunno

Not 100% on this, but about 98% :P

If you want I can post the instructions to the one I have (if I can find it :hmm ) it is probably not the same, just similar. But my suggestion is to get rid of all that crap and repair the damage. ^o)

Sounds to me like you're probably right. I couldn't guess at what the box was for if it was just a light. I thought it was because I noticed that two wires had been cut behind the top of the gas pedal and a flat plastic bit was manufactured into the pedal. I assumed there was an led in it and that the plastic diffused the light evenly.

In any case, it's attached with a hose clamp fairly shoddily so I'd like to replace it. It hasn't given me any problems, but it looks like it could as it slips on and off easier than it ought to. Unfortunately, there's not the stock pedal underneath just the bar it attached to. I'm devotedly frugal, so unless I happen across a cheap one I'll just tighten it up and keep using it.

Thanks for the insight.
