Side question on for this thread..... Is the pick up coil unraveling and destroying itself a weak point on the 96+ Geos?

Do we know.... two here on this thread makes me suspicious.
two 20+ year old geo's both having the same part fail with in 2 weeks is nothing to worry about.
the parts lasting this long in the first place speaks highly of them.

worn distributors with bad bearings that "wobble" around can strike a cmp sensor damaging it.
hitting the distributor with a hammer to break it loose can knock the cmp out of alignment causing it to be damaged.
the screws could become loose allowing it to move......
it could fail simply from age.
it could have been adjusted out of spec.

so many variables.......

already replaced that. ill try re-adjusting it and see if that does anything. crank sensor then? it is throwing the code sometimes while trying to start it. maybe the p/u coil also fried the crank in some way. i keep throwing money at it but it wont run right. lol that is a joke guys.
if your getting a code for crank position sensor:
check the wiring.
check that your oil pan seal isnt to big.

if the engine starts its not the cam or crank sensors.......they stop operation.
poor running is a seperate problem.

cap, rotor.
plugs and wires.
check fuel injector spray pattern.....should be a nice even cone.
check your egr.....a little leak will cause somedrive ability problems!
check the evap system.

describe exactly how the engine runs...cold and warm.

cold is very tough to start. seems easier with pedal assist or starting fluid. hot is not quite the same as it used to be but much closer than it is cold. cold takes 2-5 min of attempts and cranking. hot takes about 30sec or less. once it is running its purring like a kitten. better than ever before. more power than i thought i had. and very quiet, i have to keep the window rolled down to make sure it didnt stall out. im thinking "weak spark" but im running out of options

check your ignition timing.
.....................your just replaced the cmp. good chance its off.

check your spark plug gap.
check your cap and rotor.
test your fuel psi.
how is your cranking speed?...is it slow?

double check your cmp is set correctly....use the feeler guage. directions are in a earlier post in your thread i believe......if not pm me.

is the distributor ground connection clean on all 3 ends? distributor, middle connector, coil.
is the cmp harness clean and undamaged?
crank sensor harness clean and undamaged?

pull the tail light fuse to cut power to the ecm. go have a cup off coffee. reconnect. this will resetyour codes and learning cycle. you may have a problem that you have fixed that your ecm is still trying to compensate for.

run through this list for starters.....pm me if needed.

well its seems to be working now. sadly all the parts after the pickup coil were probably not needed. i went out and "adjusted" the coil, and it fires right up. there really isnt much of an adjustment to it but it made the difference. on the plus side, it runs like a champ now. thanx for the info on the p/u coil gap. though i didnt have a feeler gauge, i just pushed it very close to the dist. and it worked.

back in the day i used to use a paper matchbook cover as a feeler gauge to set points. it works really well for the distributor mounted ignitor module, too.

as a matter of fact, some gm products have a gear tooth reader that reads the starter teeth on the flywheel. the tips of the sensors have a thin piece of compressed paper on their faces. you drop them into the hole, the paper sets the air gap, and you tighten the sensor down. when the ring gear starts to turn the teeth scrape the paper off and the air gap is dead nuts on.
