My brake light on my '93 four door hatch has started turing on - stays on for a little bit - turns off. Sometimes when I turn - usually to the right - it comes on. Kinda weird. I can't tell any difference in feel or hear any sounds. Any thoughts on what to check first? It has to be connected to my emergency brake right? |

The light is turned on by either low fluid level or the parking brake (handle) switch. The first thing to do is check you fluid level. |

yep, it's the low level float switch in the brake master cylinder's reservoir. as your brakes' friction pads/ shoes surfaces wear down more brake fluid moves out of the reservoir to fill the system. so, along with topping off the reservoir's level, check the thickness of the brake linings on the car and get prepared to do a brake job pretty soon.

if you fill it and it comes on again pretty soon afterwards it means you have a leak somewhere. probably a wheel cylinder on the rear brakes. keep an eye on it. |

You need front brake pads. Do not put fluid in unless you're pretty sure it's leaking. As you wear out the pads, the fluid goes down. When you put new ones on, it will go right back to full. If you put fluid in it now, then it will be overfull when you change the pads. Just go ahead and spend the $40 and one hour that it takes to put the pads on. |
