Need some advice on fog lights. I know that some perform better based on type of bulb and it's been a while since I've looked into which bulb is best.... Let me preface by saying. 1. This is for 91 hatch 2. Do not want H.I.D.S 3. It's for work car, should be inexpensive 4. Ok with eBay or Amazon stuff or used if someone can ship Thanks all |

aside from the lenses on the individual leds, there are no optics and no focal advantage from the leds lights in your link. fail, fail, fail. decide whether you want a fog operation or a driving light operation and look for something that has a reflector inside an optically advantageous lens. a 55 watt h1 bulb is not a bad way to go. a fog light will provide a wide beam with a sharp upper cutoff to project light under the fog without causing light to refract from the water molecules which tends to blind the driver. a driving light will have a more narrow beam that provides a much longer focal point so that it reaches beyond the focal point of the headlights. there are some inexpensive chinese made projector lights that have a thick, domed lense, a compact reflector, and run a 35 or 55 watt h1 incandescent lamp that can do either fog or driving light duty. for fogs, use the 35 watt lamp, for driving, use the 55 watt lamp. the 35 watt lamp will produce a light with a yellow cast while the 55 watt lamp will be closer to white. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2X-car-55W-H3-halogen-bulb-universal-Projector-Fog-Lights-Lens-kit-DRIVING-Lamp-/231306661828?hash=item35daf38fc4#ht_14614wt_1012 |

So I bought a pair of universal fog lights like T3 recommended. I'll do a quick write up unless someone has already done one... |

T3 is that a custom bumper or where did you get the black fog light cover? |

i used mk2 (89-91) suzuki swift gt body parts to build that car. the vent cowlings were used on the lesser trim level swift cars as fillers for the driving lights that came on the swift gt. i did a bunch of lighting mods to this vert including the european e code glass headlights with hid ballasts and lamps, the euro clear corners with white led running lights and additional amber leds that echo the bumper mounted turn signals, and complete led conversion for every light except the headlights and fog lights. i even worked in some cree 3 watt eagle eye leds as interior map lighting by using the holes in the windshield frame where the sun visors mounted. |

I read through most of your write ups t3ragtop (awesome and inspiring). I forgot about the fog inserts. I'm heading to the wrecking yard this morning, and now I have one more thing on my list. I'm sold on the fog lights. I will have to find a fog light switch as well. Someone ran off with the switch when they butchered the wiring to it. They did leave an incredibly beat up paper weights of the remains of the foglights in the back seat. Thanks for the information again. |

soler, you are starting out with a gt that has the chassis wiring to support the driving lights. the relay is a little round unit mounted under the dash on the steering column. on the dash mounted control switch, you can get those from a swift gt or a tracker. they shared the same part. for the mk3 (92-94) swift you'd look at a 96 or 97 tracker or sidekick. for the mk2 (89-91) swift you'd look at the pre-97 tracker or sidekick. if you'd prefer the original swift driving lights i have a pair i'll never use left over from a parts trade. one of the lenses has a bull's eye from a rock strike that could be fixed with a windshield repair kit using clear epoxy. i also have a relay that has been sitting on top of a tool box for about 3 years.

702852, the projector fogs you ordered come with mounting brackets that will adapt to your non-gt front bumper. you will need to build your control wiring with a switch and a relay. i don't think that any of the variant sf416 cars came with wiring to support the aux lighting except the gt and turbo3 models. it's not all that complicated. you need a supply wire fused for 15 amps from the battery to the control relay. you need a control wire fused for 1 amp from the switch to the control relay's actuating coil. you can take your control wiring power from a switched source to the lighting switch and relay coil so that the aux lighting turns off when you switch off the ignition key you can also pull the control supply off a lighting circuit so that the aux lighting is only on when the parking lights or headlights are on. the normal mode for the aux control wiring is set up so that driving lights will only operate when the high beams are on and fog lights are only on when the low beams are on. since my hid headlights are so bright i wired my fogs so that they can be used when the parking lights are on. that way i have the white leds in the front corner lights lit up with the fogs controlled by their own switch. the city i live in has 5 big rivers running through it and those river bottoms can be really heavily foggy at night. i have actually had a semi truck run up the rear end of my car once before in a fog and i'm still nervous about that 40 years later. i was driving a little fiberglass saab sports car and the semi rolled right up over my car, resting it's front bumper on the roll bar of my car which lifted the truck's steering tires up off the road. i became the truck's steering until my little car's wheels and suspension collapsed. i almost bit the bullet on that one but walked away with only cuts on the back of my head from the glass shards from the rear glass. so, yeah, the rear of my vert can be lit up like a christmas tree with white and red strobed leds. this year i'm adding a new rear end collision warning light to the fog warning system. it's red scanner led that paints a red warning bar on the road about 6 feet behind the car. i get called out for emergency work in the middle of the night - truck crashes on the interstates and fuel spills, and fog really makes me nervous. i trust my own driving but i don't trust the other drivers out there. drunk drivers are bad enough but those cowboy truckers burning across the interstates at night are really scary for me. |
