You are right. I talked to the DOL, and based on what they said I knew I didn't want to try it. The fellow I talked to seemed to know his stuff. And I will bet you a dollar that the regs have not EASED any since that time.

Just a small update on this, i just got off the phone with a guy who works for an importer and he did say it can be expensive but it depends on the car. The biggest obstacle he said is usually the instrument cluster. If is had MPH and stuff on it. His fees say for a 90 swift he said would be around $600. But the real cost is making sure the car meets US specs. |

Ok what if you go across the border in a truck and inclosed trailer.. took the car apart I'd say like 70%. Put said car/parts in trailer. With bill of sale and brought it back. Couldn't you just say hey it's just parts.

I have come across with a front end from 2 cars and a lot other parts. Had the border guard look at what I had and they waved me through. May be a bit difficult depending on how much of the car you have in one trip. |

Reminds me of when I was working the docks. Met a couple guys from Sweden that would come here twice a year looking for muscle cars to ship back. They would pick up several nice ones, haul them to a shop close to the port, snatch out the engine & trans, then put them in a shipping container. The car bodys would be shipped in a different container. When everything arrived in Sweden, another shop close to the docks would reassemble everything. When I asked why they went through all that trouble, they said their gubermint kills them with import taxes on complete cars. They said they report shipping in spare parts. Much cheaper. Also said they were making a killing doing it. Seems the Sweeds love our old iron.

Instrument cluster shouldn't be a problem, they all have KPH and MPH, the Canadian cars have the KPH printed bigger and the US cars have MPH printed bigger. Plus, the cluster costs $50 at a junkyard and swaps in half an hour. I think the hold up is the seatbelts on the GEN2 cars, Canada didn't have the automatic ones on the doors. Could be wrong about that, it's a vague recollection from a TeamSwift thread about ten years ago. Edited by Woodie, May 23 2015, 06:17 AM.
