Working on this again!

No pics, but I have the front end apart again at the moment. Started hearing some noise from the drivers side bearing so I went ahead and pulled it all apart. Bearing "seems" fine, but i'm going to have them rebuilt anyways to be safe.

Since I planned on having the car down for a little while, I went ahead and ordered a new set of shocks/struts (KYBs) and tophats. Going to cut a few coils off the springs while i'm swapping them onto the new setup. Since my 92 Metro will be down for at least the next year, I grabbed the TurbineTech brace off of it and put it on this one.

I'm also planning on pulling the shifter out of the car and using 3M window-weld to solidify the rubber mount. Has done wonders in my past 2 Metros that I did it to.

The cam seal is leaking a good bit of oil, so I'm going to use that as an excuse to throw in the XFi-Cam/adjustable sprocket I have sitting around.

Looking for ward to getting the car back on the road! My Miata and my Truck are killing me on gas!!!

Been busy these past few months with Dad's Metro (he still hasn't decided to drive it, so it's unofficially mine until he does).

Noticed that I was having terrible camber wear on my new 13" wheels and needed tires because of it. Instead of spending money on new 13" tires I decided that it would be a good opportunity to put new tires on my spare set of 15" wheels that i'd previously had on my 95. I had a set of decent tires on the 15s, however they were waaaaaay to big (195/60/15s), so I purchased a set of Nexen 175/50/15s for $290 installed. Also got a fresh alignment since i'd recently changed the struts/shocks and added an underbody brace.

Rides so much better with much more stability and comfort. My mileage wasn't affected too much as they are not overly heavy. Averaging 45mpg after the install.

With Geos on the Gulf almost a month away, it's time for my usual last minute scramble to get a car ready for the trip.

The clutch on this car has been funky since we purchased it a year ago. It's always had a vibration while engaging. I assumed it was a worn out clutch this past year. While driving the car yesterday, I finally had a major issue with the clutch. It didn't disengage on my way home yesterday. Lucky for me, I had already planned on changing the clutch out before the trip.

Went ahead and pulled the engine and the trans today. I'm going to fix all the nagging oil leaks while it's out along with replacing the clutch. What I found kinda shocked me. I'd assumed that the clutch was original, but I no longer believe that.

I'll let the pics do the talking, and i'll recap afterwords:

As you probably noticed: The springs in the clutch have fallen apart. I don't know if it was done intentionally, however I do know that i've never seen springs loose in a clutch.

I am going to reuse the GTi clutch and flywheel from my Racecar 92 Metro, since it's going to be down for a long time. Also broke a manifold bolt still inside the manifold, so i'll be on the lookout for a header.

More updates tomorrow!

Consider yourself lucky, dropped springs on at least 3 3 cylinder clutches.

Decent bit of progress today. Took the accessories off the engine and spent most of the day cleaning the engine, transmission, and car itself. Did go ahead and swap an XFi cam into it while I had it apart.

I used a combination of "Fast 505" and multiple scotch brite pads. The engine and transmission were extremely greasy. I managed to get most of the grime off of both, however it didn't come out as clean as i'd wanted, so i'm going to paint both. I'm just going to post the pictures in order from the beginning of the day up to when I called it quits a few minutes ago. Got to cold to be playing with water.

Got the engine and trans back in the car and running. Swapped my G13 Flywheel and Centerforce dual friction clutch into it from my formerly boosted Metro.

Gotta put the axles in and then I'll get to work on the suspension!

Got the engine and trans back in. Got a feeling I have the timing off, but i won't know for sure until I drive it. Went ahead and started working on the suspension. Had to use a come-along to get the TT underbody brace on. I recently put new shocks up front, but never got around to do the rears. Since I ordered a set of H&R springs, I figured that'd be a good time to do the rears as well.

I cut 1 coil off the springs just like I did on my other Smurf since I knew it would have a slight sag to it. Ran into a problem with the RR toe arm and had to order a new one. Once that gets in I'll be able to wrap it up and take it for a test drive!

Here's a picture dump of the progress. The pic of the car from the sides is with the front H&Rs installed but still on the factory struts/springs in the rear. I'm more excited to clean up my yard and shop than to actually drive the car, lol.
