I've owned my '91 Metro for 2 days and TWICE I have turned the key with no cranking. Battery has juice, horns and light work, small "click" when the key is turned but no cranking. 1. First time it happened, I repeatedly turn the key back and forth and after a few minutes, it cranked and started. 2. Second time, no amount of key turning worked. I opened the hood, located the starter and "tapped" it several times with a stick/hammer. Then reached in, grabbed a short 2: wire that seems to go from solenoid to starter and wiggled it for good luck. Got in, it cranked and started. Ok, I can't live with an unreliable starter. How difficult is it to replace this? Are the starter and solenoid separate items? Any tips? |

Your starter and solenoid are GOOD. The 'short wire from the starter to solenoid' has a connector on the end of it. That connector get corroded. clean it. metros are famous for ground connections getting corroded. polish the following connections: every end of every battery cable-bottom of TB has a couple of wires grounded to it. - distributor has a ground wire - coil has a ground wire - any other grund connection you can find----take them apart and polish them. If you still have problems there is a 'bypass' system that works every time--I will see if I can find it for you. Great information! Thank you all. I will follow the relay route. Is there s specific part number that people have used, of is it generic 30A relay? |
