In addition to my 1990 Geo Metro (Red Dawn) and 1988 Chevy Sprint Metro (Blue Boy), I apparently have been bitten by the Chevy Sprint bug and picked up a stock 1988 Chevy Sprint 4-door wagon with 5 speed transmission. The car was located about 2 hours from my house, and the owner said the car drove good and that I could make it home, no problem. Well, about 2/3 of the way home something happened and it began chugging pretty bad. It felt like a loss of compression, but it could be any number of things, from a clogged cat, blown valve, or something more sinister. My plan is to slowly rebuild the car after I finish rebuilding my 1988 Chevy Sprint Metro. The car needs a lot of work, but the body is 99% rust free. It has absolutely zero rust on the rockers and framehorns and just a tiny bit inside the rear wheel well and gas cap area. Some other problems include a banged up drivers door, busted mirror, bent window regulator (from the banged up door), no muffler, crappy interior, and some microdents in the front fenders. The good news is I found another 88 Sprint Metro 4-door at a local junkyard with an excellent interior and doors that are dent free, so I'll slowly pick that car clean and use the parts for the new one. Once all of the cars are complete I'll have a decision to make. Which 2 of the 3 cars should I keep? My 90 Metro is clearly in better shape and with more extras than the other two, but you can't knock 55+ mpgs from the Chevy Sprint Metro or high 40's from the Chevy Sprint. Plus my twins are getting bigger so a four door is nice to have. More pics to follow. I am naming this car "Red Four." ![]()

Wow I thought those 4 door sprints were rare, I'm impressed. I didn't think I would ever see any one around here buy one because they are rare. I love the wagons man, and that car looks great. |

Looking good! I just drug home an 89 4 door 3/5 - I'm calling her Gladys (since that's the town I got her in). I just noticed that extra little sort of built in spoiler on the hatch that appears to give it more rigidity than the later models. How will you ever get the mandatory butt dent in the hatch?

The Red Four has been sitting in the garage most of the summer while I worked on other projects, but I've been slowly doing some things with it and thought it was time for an update. First, I took the running, rebuilt engine out of the blue 88 Sprint Metro and placed it in Red Four. This is only a temporary situation as I will have the Red Four engine professionally rebuilt and installed hopefully by Christmas.![]() Secondly, I removed the exhaust system from the other Sprint and placed it on Red Four. Since the car is a bit longer than a standard Sprint I had to to clamp some extension pieces on. I'll get the exhaust professionally welded when everything else is completed. Third, I replaced the driver side door with a tan one I found at a local junkyard, scraped all of the pinstriping off, and painted it flat black. It will need a bit of filler, but the main part of it is dent free and the regulator works perfectly. I then spent a large amount of time banging out dents and filling in holes in the floorboard and gas cap area. It's pretty much rust free but I wanted to shore up those areas that weren't. Now I'm focusing on the interior. After removing the carpet and completely sanitizing the floorboards I fixed whatever small holes there were on the floorpan.....pretty solid overall. Here's a before and after of the interior. The carpet was nasty with dirt and some kind of sticky, syrupy crap packed into the carpet. I power washed it completely clean, although it has a few holes on the driver side. ![]() ![]() ![]() Got all of the underpadding in..... ![]() ![]() and the newly cleaned carpet down.....with some floor mats to cover the holes. ![]() More pics later when I get the trim all back in. |
