I replaced the rear drum on my car due to the bearings getting loud. I had some spare drums so I just replaced the whole unit. Are the seals suppose to be taken off on the outside of the bearings? I can remember reading about replacing the bearings and it seemed like it was suppose to be taken off. |

Only the inner seals should be removed. Pack the bearings, and fill hub center cavity, with grease.

Are the koyo bearings better or any bearing okay if you keep grease in them? |

When you take the outer seal off the inside bearing, you have just created a crud magnet. Bearings don't like crud in their grease. The outer bearing is okay because it lives behind a steel dust cap, but the other seal is all you have between healthy bearings and no bearings. |

I've used Koyo's and they appear to be fine. Just be sure to grease them. Not sure why they are shipped so dry. I should have specified what I meant by inner seals. I remove the seals that are inside the hub center cavity. The outboard seals remain.

Make sure to use a hi temp grease. I have used Koyo bearing in my transmissions for decades. They are good bearings. I won't use KBC bearings at all. Very cheaply made. I have taken them out of the box and they were looser than a use Nachi. |

I replaced my bearings couple of years ago, no issues. I used Timken. The old were singing like canaries. Don't go overboard on the grease. Pack the bearings as much as they will take, but the inner hub I would just coat it. |

My 95 hb rear is starting to roar also, don't fell anything getting hot, but has to be a bearing. I checked at car quest today, they can get the bearings (not sure the brand), but cant tell me if they are sealed bearings, or if there is a seal for the inner. The pic freego has looks like the bearing car quest had, is there suppose to be an inner seal? Would have to order parts, and would like to keep down time as short as possible. Not trying to take over your post, any help would be great. |
