Just looking for opinions on what is the best size. Wider tires give better ride but lower mileage. Do wider tires rub when turning sharply? What about in the snow are wider or narrower tires better? |

In summer I run 195/50/15 on a stock 92 Metro with no lowering springs. (They do not rub) In winter I run a 155/80/13 on the same car. You want a narrow tire in the winter to be able to go thru the snow.

There you go. ![]() Overgeneralized assumption that is not necessarily true. Ride is just as much if not more a function of actual section height/diameter, not just width, and any possible increase change in frontal area depends on the exact section height and width change, and how much any difference may be offset or compounded by several other variables (such as increased chassis height, how much the wheel well is filled, rotational mass changes, diameter changes, etc, and can not be generalized that simply. Only if they are too wide.

Since 175/70 would only rev the engine by 16 more in 5th at 65 mph 3190 vs. 3206 RPM isn't a negative for going wider, if they ride better, don't necessarily decrease MPG, better rain traction, hmm... More people thus far have polled 175/70 also. But there must be a reason the engineers choose 155/80. Thanks but 195/50 wouldn't be for me, I know it goes againt the popular trend but I prefer high profile tires. If you were to use only 1 set of tires yearlong would you go 155/80 or 175/70? |

Best 'price' would be 155/80, best overall would probably be 175/70. |

We've put the 175's on Barbs car since we owned it. She loves them & she does not care about mpg. I'm considering the 185"s next time for a slightly smoother ride. We have potholes that eat Metro tires for breakfast/lunch/dinner/midnight snack. I will definitely put the wider tires on mine when this set wears out. The handling difference in the high winds we get here is amazing. |

Glad to hear Ohio isn't the only state with a perpetual asphalt, shovel, and roller shortage. ![]() All of you folks with the 175 70 13s seem to love the ride. I'm sold, even though it will increase my 'total' gearing (tire diameter & final drive) to nearly the same as I would have if i installed a 4.10 transaxle in my Vert, forever dashing my hopes of being to outdrag t3's 126 hp twincam. You know what else greatly improves handling in crosswinds? Any aerodynamic modification that reduces unstable shedding of the von Karman vortex street, such as an airdam, undertray (full or partial), or any boattail type device (full or partial, aka "Kammback"). Of course, you also have to suffer from the side effect of reduced drag and increased fuel economy, but the ride alone is well worth it.

I have 185/65/14 on my 2000... seems to be pretty nice compared to my other metros... definitely a smoother ride I don't think it really hurts anything I'll probably stay with thus size

Well there certainly appears to be an argument in favor of 175/70 when I get new tires in the future i'll need to consider them, though stock tires are better in snow, though most of my commute is on major streets and freeway so this might not be a reason not to get 175/70. |
