Anyone know of a good camera system I can mount on my passenger side mirror delete plate? I want something with a reversible-image monitor, preferably in color, so it looks as much like the mirror image I'm used to. |

So you do not really want to remove the rear view mirror, you mean you want to mount a video camera where the side view mirror used to be.

Was sitting next to a Honda and noticed cameras below the pax mirror. I have heard that the rear view cameras are a standard option on them now. Kind of cool way to move towards getting rid of them I'm thinking. Be sure to check your state laws regarding your mirrors before removing them if that's your goal. Vkhelldog tried it here in WA and even though he had mirrors inside his car the state patrol wouldn't stop bugging him about them and told him to put the stock mirrors back on or get a ticket. |

I figure it's only a matter of time until all mirrors are replaced with camera and displays on new cars. Keep us posted on what you come up with... Edited by brsja, May 9 2015, 03:01 PM.

I have been thinking about this since you brought it up, even went over to eBay to see what is available. Could do a setup with this for your rear view. Haven't decided yet but there are 3 cameras I am interested in for the side. One Two Three Side mirror cameras could plug into this monitor. There are a couple other systems I have looked at. This system is designed for big rigs. But it does have 2 camera hookups but it doesn't say if you can view them on one screen or if you only one at a time. It does say it has the mirror reversing you were asking about perfesser. I did see a system there that has 4 cameras and shows a pic of the monitor showing 4 images at once. |

well what i found out is get the right camera, some cameras are made for full time viewing, in the instructions it states that it only used in reverse, if this is mentioned be careful as the camera or the viewing lens you look at might over heat, mine over heated because i left in on while driving, it was only for using in reverse, so the camera burned out, had to get another. just be sure its for full time viewing or only reverse, plus check local laws as they dont like the driver to stare at the viewing lens while driving, but then again you got kids texting so what really matters huh? redline |

Good advice, thanks. Could you tell us which ones worked for you? Edited by Bjetmech, May 15 2015, 03:20 AM.

Thanks! I like the idea of the way the #2 camera is just a tiny bump and is fully adjustable for direction. It would still need a monitor, but the pricing is much better than I had feared. The big rig camera system looks ideal for installation on my bus, which is getting a major remodeling this year. I've already replaced the original mirrors with some far superior units off a Peterbilt tractor, but there's still a blind spot behind me big enough to hide a semi in. Being able to see when backing would just be gravy! I was driving through Salt Lake City in it a few years ago. Couple of guys in a Metro-sized car pulled alongside the right rear corner just as I turned on my signals to get into that lane for a rapidly approaching exit. I gave them a few seconds of turn signal, then started easing over. Somewhere off in the distance I heard a tiny, tinny bleating sound, kind of like a sick lamb calling for its mother. There was no bump so I guess when that big white cliff started closing their gap they decided that yielding was the wise choice! It would have been really nice to have had a rear view camera, and many other occasions.

Here is the 4 way monitor. This may be a good place to start and just add the camera of your choice. |

I bought one of those long rally style rear view mirrors for my tracker. It goes across the entire front of the car and stops 2 in away from the doors on either side. It shows my blind spots and everything for only $10 at pep boys. I had to remove the stock sun visors, but I dont think you would have to do this on the metro. I had to bc sun roof was in the way to mount it where I actually wanted it. All these cameras and stuff might work a tad better, but it has a few problems. Expense is probably the biggest one. Its gonna cost a bit once you get it all setup and running and all for a metro? The hatch backs are nothing but windows. Even without mirrors you can pretty much just turn your head for a second and see everything anyway. These cars are also super easy to break into so if you do go through all this trouble, someone might walk by and see a screen and decided to just help themselves. Last is the cops. I highly doubt a cop is just going to be cool with you running around with cameras instead of mirrors. A few might, but theres always that one cop who does every little thing by the book. |

I also have one of those mirrors in my metro. Installed it's about a foot and a half from my face. Took my eyes weeks to adjust to it being there. Anyone that sits in my drivers seat the first words out of their mouth is "whoa that's close". Also my visors are unusable.

I have a Wink mirror in mine. Kinda blew 1DCGUY's mind the first time he sat behind it. I didn't have to do anything to the visors, and still have full use of them. No interference with the sunroof either. All I want to do with the camera is replace the passenger side mirror. As for cost justification, how much of what we all do with these cars can stand up to that kind of scrutiny anyway? ![]() |

I want to do the same, but may just mess with a rear view and since I do have a driver side mirror delete just go all out rear cameras. |
